At 5 am?

At 5 am this morning i had a hen cackle like she was laying a soft ball.
But when I went out their 2 hours later their was no egg.

Is this normal?

i think so. my hens cackle any time during the day. i can't hear them if they do it early in the morning, though. my bedroom is on te other side of the house.

One time in the morning i heard what sounded like chicken music coming from their cage. I got up expecting an egg or to but it was the rooster that had gotten the hens all excited then they started clucking. It sounded like a chicken band!

When ours hens are gonna lay, they cackle all darned day long.

Sometimes, if they do that at night, it means they were startled by something, perhaps a predator trying to get in. Mine do it if they see a whitetail deer out their window or a stray cat.
