tina turner is my 2.5-3 year old leghorn.
Last thursday evening when i went to put the girls back in their run I noticed she’d already let herself back in & her tail feathers looked a bit droopy. it’s been VERY hot this week ( heat index of 105°F some days) and all the girls looked hot so i assumed it was heat related, gave them fresh electrolytes & probiotic water additives and locked them up for the night.
Friday morning when i got home from work she seemed fine, maybe a little slower and paler than her friends but tail feathers were up and she was eating and drinking enthusiastically. I checked her vent and didn’t feel an egg so i just added some nutridrench into fresh water and gave her some scrambled eggs with the shell- all seemed ok. But then when I came out to put them away before work Friday evening she looked droopy and pale again & isolated herself to a far corner of the run.
Even though I didn’t really suspect she was egg bound, her butt was very crusty so we soaked her in epsom salts and put her in isolation. She got into the lay box and i said a prayer and went to work. The next morning when i came home she seemed even worse. Still drinking and moving around a bit, but definitely paler and less energy/interest in food. I gave her a rapid response 1ml dose of nutridrench with a syringe. After 24 hours with no improvement i took a stool (mostly urates and mucus) to work and spent a few hours looking at under the scope- i work in a human lab and while my parasitology knowledge isn’t the best- i convinced myself i saw coccidia oocysts in her sample. i immediately ordered corid and gave her 0.3ml by mouth everyday for 3 days- as well as adding the recommended dose to the rest of the flocks water. the day after the corid regimen was over (2-3days ago? time is running together!) i gave her some nutridrench in her water. yesterday i tried some recovery 911. i’m not seeing any improvement. she just looks pale and sad. her butt is wildly pasty after 24 hours. i am seeing some brown stool in her enclosure now which makes me think she’s eating *some* though most of her droppings appear yellow and foamy- she’s still drinking and moving around some but just appears very weak.
i’ve called around and tried to find a vet that would take her, or give me advice with no luck and i’m just at a loss of what to do next, or if im just making her suffer by trying so hard.
please give me advice. im not sure what to do or what else to try.
will try to figure out how to attach photos
