At wits end. Neighbors dogs

Do any of your local tv stations have one of those 'working for you' series on their local news?

You know, where one of the reporters has a weekly or monthly episode of some local resident that is having a problem with some company or a neighbor or something, and they are getting the run-around, or getting nowhere due to red-tape etc. and the reporter comes over and interviews all involved, and they sort of work as an ombudsman to help out.

Not sure if that would be appropriate here.

I can't believe that animal control won't come pick up the dogs, by the way. i've never heard of such a thing.

i agree with earlier posters that finding out what the laws/ordinances are, and keeping a detailed log of all conversations etc. along with photos & videos is Vital.

good luck

If it were me, I'd live trap the animal.

Please don't get me wrong here....it's not because I FEEL for the animal, or because I don't want to HURT it.

You have given the owner & the police more notice than I would, and to no avail. They have ignored you & your pleas.

The live trap would be for only two reasons:
1) It would be on duty while I was asleep or not on guard for MY CHICKEN'S LIVES.
2) I could dispatch the offending creature at my leisure, and by any means I see fit.

Then I'd keep my mouth SHUT. There is no point in angering neighbors after-the-fact.

The way I see it, you have THE RIGHT & OBLIGATION to protect what is yours on your own property.

If stray chickens decided to make a meal of my garden, I'd dispatch them. If stray dogs decided to make a meal of my chickens, the same would go for them.

SSS, when all legal means fail to yeild a result.

Animal control does not service our area either. When the neighbor's dogs kept trespassing, we called the sherif, and he said to shoot them would be the most effective and least problematic thing to do.

Unfortunately, you can't just "rehome" someone else's animals. That would be setting yourself up for a theft charge, because you knew they had an owner. Ditto for taking it to the Humane Society; they first thing they ask you is "Do you know who the owners are?"

No comment about SSS, but its not ok to re-home

I guess you have never been to NH....... all rules null and void.

I don't make the rules, but I have to live by them. Here in Texas it's illegal to take someone else's cattle, pets, property. That's theft or rustling, both of which will get you jail time. On the other hand, you have an absolute right to shoot anything that's attacking your livestock, and that includes dogs.

If you check behind my pond, you'll find a dog collar marking the grave of the last dog that killed my birds.

PS: Out here in the country, we don't have a Humane Society or Animal Control. If you call the Sheriff's Dept., they tell you to "just shoot it."

When I was living in the city my neighbor's dog would come and poo on my lawn so I kindly told the owner that I was putting out poison to kill rodents and other "pests". I then put out empty containers because I didn't have the heart to use the stuff but it was quite affective.

So all of you who practice SSS, do you have holes pre-dug? Do the neighbors live far enough away they wouldn't hear the shot. I don't think I'd have the heart to do it myself, but I am starting to get pretty fed up.

Today 2 dogs were in our yard. The first was chased off easily but the second was just brain dead. Tried to find the owner. On the way, the second dog rejoined. His owners made a half-hearted attempt to call him back, but just let him run away. We took their dog back and explained he was chasing our chickens. They said sorry, we'll tie him up. Arrggh.

We live on a corner. The neighbors along our private road are GREAT with their dogs. The neighbors living along the other dirt road- no clue. I am really getting peaved with the number of stray dogs showing up that don't even have collars or rabies tags.

So I'd like to hear of some solutions short of SSS. We have been considering a paintball gun. Some places its considered cruelty to shoot with a paintball gun instead of killing. I'm thinking maybe spray paint or pepper spray. Can you get skunk scent in a can? That might convince someone not to let their dog run and they wouldn't even realize it was a person that did it.

I believe you get the court costs/filing fees back if you win the case, at least I did along with monetary damages. The court will make the neighbor pay them.

And YES! take photos if it occurs again. A picture is worth a thousand words in court. I had a whole file including photos of the mutilated chickens and babies...just handed it to the judge when my neighbor said his dogs were "never were out of the yard". Judge was irate that he lied and threw the book at him.
