Ate their feet off!!!

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM 2YR OR SO AGO WITH 2 OF MY SPARE PENS... HAVE ALL THE PENS "LAND MINED" WITH TRAPS UNDERNEATH... COULDNT FIGURE OUT WHY I KEPT LOOSING BIRDS AND NO COONS IN THE TRAPS, SO I FIRED UP THE TRUSTY OLD GAME CAMERA...~~~ OWLS! I HAD 3 DIFFERENT OWLS THAT WOULD ASSAULT THE PEN MULTIPLE TIMES EACH NIGHT... SOME STEALTH ATTACKS SNEAK UP AND GRAB A BIRD THRU THE WIRE.... SOME TERROR ATTACKS WHERE THEY WOULD VICIOUSLY ATTACK AND PANIC THE BIRDS THEM GRAB 1 AS THEY ALL RUN AROUND LIKE THE WORLD WAS ON FIRE... THEN AN HOUR OR 2 LATER BACK TO STEALTH MODE ~ THEY WERE QUITE ADEPT AT CHANGING THINGS TO GET THE FOOD. THE ONLY FINAL SOLUTION WAS TO COMPLETELY COVER ALL SIDES OF THE PEN WITH POLY TARP AND FENCE IN THE ENTIRE AREA UNDER THE PEN~ VIRTUALLY CREATING A QUAIL FORT KNOX.. (YES THEY CAN FLY UPSIDE DOWN) SO NOTHING COULD GET ANYWHERE CLOSE TO THE BIRDS OTHER THAN THE FRONT WALL. STILL OCCAISIONALLY HAVE TROUBLES WITH A LOSS EVERY SO OFTEN... USUALLY FROM ABOUT AUGUST THRU DECEMBER (ONCE THE FLEDGLING OWLS HAVE BEEN KICKED OUT BY MOM AND DAD AND NOW HAVE TO FEND FOR THEMSELVES) COMMON INJURIES FROM THIS WERE MISSING FEET, LEGS PULLED COMPLETELY OFF, AND MISSING HEADS, OCCAISIONALLY YOU'LL FIND A BODY THAT WAS PULLED UP TO THE FENCE AND AS MUCH MEAT EATEN OFF AS THEY COULD GET THEIR BEAKS INTO, BUT MOSTLY LEGS AND HEADS...

SORRY FRANK I KNOW HOW INFURIATING IT CAN BE

I've had it happen too I lost 12 6wk old pheasant and a ringneck dove. Get them critters! My dove got it's whole leg hip and all ripped off through the 1/4" hwc floor and all 12 pheasant got decapitated (10 one night the remaining 2 the next) what ever it was peeled the 1" chicken wire off the side of my divided hutch.

I was in city limits and couldn't set traps or shoot them, good luck catching yours.

JJ.....You may have a point!! I have been setting traps for Coons and have caught nothing?? About 2 weeks ago in the Daytime, I seen a big Owl on 2 or 3 Occasions ( In my neighbors Trees)...Maybe that's what it is!!Thanks JJ

Thanks everyone else for the Suggestions....Whatever it was, pulled the legs off through 1/2" floor wire!!...For sure it's not Rats,Weasels,or Minks....

I always see those little cute pigmy owls at night. Now I am blessed I have all my quail indoors and the Stellar coop birds locked in fort Knox. Whoosh! I would never have thought of owls! And I set traps and such and what do I catch? A rooster and a couple guineas! So much for that!

Good luck Frank on finding the culprit and so sorry about your loss!

Frank Hawks Will Have The Same Mo... Only Way To Differentiate Is Time Of Attack... Daylight Vs Nighttime.

Anytime Legs Are Pulled Off Thru An Elevated Floor Wiring The Top 3 Usual Suspects Will Always Be Coons, Hawks, And Owls. Best Idea I Can Offer Are To Perimeter Fence The Bottom Of Your Pens... All The Way To The Ground, Can Be Metal Chicken Wire, Kennel Fence Wire, Or Even Chain Link. Make Sure Its Tight And At Least Down To The Earth, Buried Is Better.

Decapitation Attacks Require More And Smaller Wire Or Multiple Layers Of Wire That Are Overlapped So The Openings Are Smaller, Or Solid Wall Construction/ Overlay. ..... Again Daytime Vs Nighttime Is Important Info To Point You Toward The Most Likely Suspects.

Dont Be Surprised If Tactics Change After You Have Secured 1 Area Or The Other. Most Predators Will Have A Standard Battle Plan, But As Many Can Tell You Standard Battle Plans Only Work Until The 1st Actual Contact And Are Thereby Subject To Change ~ Hunger Is A Strong Motivator

Well, the Varmit turned out to be a huge Feral Cat!! I caught him in the Daytime hanging upside down on the floor of one of my Cages about 3 weeks ago . I figured he would eventually mess up......Well he did!!

He got some hot Lead through his head!! NO PROBLEMS NOW!! YEEE HAAAAWW!!!!!
