Good morning! We have been building a new run for our 16 wk old hens and are to the point of attaching the poultry wire. Before I hear the suggestions regarding the use of hardware cloth rather than chicken wire, this run is located within a 6 ft. privacy fence, just a few yards from our back deck. The run is more for protection from neighboring hawks (and my adorable but pesky toddler) than anything, and we are wiring the top, as well. Hardware cloth was too cost-prohibitive.

Now, on to the question at hand...any recommendations for attaching the chicken wire to the wooden posts, and also for connecting the sections of wire?

Thanks!!!

For what it's worth, when I made something like this, I used 3/4 " PVC and bird netting. Used zip ties to attach netting to PVC. It's 8"x14"- although you can make any size. Weighs about 20lbs and super easy to move and keep girls covered/ protected and out of your flower beds. If you haven't already bought supplies, you might consider this option...IMHO.

You can use a regular staple gun to attach the wire to the posts. This is enough if you are just concerned with keeping them in (not predators).

Thanks, Cyndi! I have already bought the supplies and framed it out, so I'll have to proceed with my original concept for this one, but we have talked about building another small run in another part of our yard (2 acres), and something lightweight and portable would be awesome. I'll keep your suggestions in mind!

I used poultry netting and put it on with a air compressor with nail gun with 1 1/2 in staples worked really good and was very quick. You can get the wire really tight with a helper. Good luck. Where in Alabama r u ? Im in Al. also.

Thanks for all of your suggestions! I ended up going with a NEW, heavy duty staple gun with longer staples and have had more success. My hens have been keeping a close eye on the progress, so hopefully they will be moving into their new pad soon :)
