Attaching hardware cloth with washers and screws?

I plan to use 1/2" hardware cloth on my run and attach it to the wood using the washers and screws method. I can't decide what size washers and screws to purchase. Would 1" fender washers be the right size? How long should the screws be to make sure it stays secure?

1" fender washers are what I have. Screws are... 1"? 1.25"? I don't recall.

Screw length would depend on the frame. Is it 1x or 2x? You don't want the screw to poke out the back side.

I use 1.5" lag screws with 1" fender washers....
