Attack of the empty bucket

wee.gif

I'm so glad those two get to stay together!!!

I don't know much about roosters, or maybe I know nothing really about rooster behavior, but can he be trained to leave you alone and act civil? I think if so, that would be the best compromise! Then you both can live in harmony.

Loved this thread!

Buckethead? stop it.... hee hee hee... relocating buckets.. hee hee hee

geez i love you guys.. this is great :)

but regarding the aggressive rooster - for my $0.02... i have two roosters, Big Pansy - the most laid back roo ever hatched. and Fred my evil arch enemy. my hubby wouldnt let us do away with the evil Fred on "rooster day" (we dressed 5 younger and totally useless roos) so i'm stuck with him for the rest of my natural life. in fact someone pawned him off on us b/c he was such a nasty so-n-so. they had kids and b/c he would jump eye-high to a child he came to us. now i'm just barely taller than most tweens.... so i've been battling him since day one.

but

i wouldnt necessarily give him up b/c he does such a good job with the girls. Big Pansy just doenst get the 'protect and serve' thing and Fred is a natural - flying at the equally evil gander like a Romulan War Bird, fending off over-interested drakes, and warning the ladies of death from the sky in the form of hawks.

i think the key is to get a GOOD rooster - then, if he is aggressive, evaluate if you are willing to go out there with a broom to defend yourself - or teach the dog "get the rooster" to keep him off you while you are working. but if you have kids or let small children come over.. wow into the pot he goes.

i'd give that roo a chance to prove himself then decide if he's just plain mean enough to eat.

Crockpot is not yet an evil attack rooster. He has come after me before, but only when reaching into a small pen for him. When he is loose he is wary and keeping an eye on me, but does not attack me.

YET.

He is also only 12-13 weeks old. doesn't he seem well developed for that age? To me he looks like he should be 6 months or something? But I have had him since about 1 week old, so I know his age is correct.

My giant rooster does try to break up fights with the girls.......he also shoves them out of the way to get to the food and does not seem very protective. Since he is a little younger and such a slow maturing breed (jersey giant), I am giving him some time to see if he gets more protective as he matures. He is about 10-11 weeks old and has not yet even crowed. Crockpot has been crowing since about 5 weeks. I don't NEED a rooster, so if my Giant rooster is not overly protective, that would be okay too, I guess. I just figure if I have a good protective one, I would be able to let them out in the yard to free range when I am not home.

I have no qualms about whacking Crockpot with a baseball bat (padded or otherwise, ha ha ha) if he is a big jerk. I don't have any kids and neither do my neighbors and he will either be kept in a secure pen or fenced yard, so I am not too worried about him being an angry rooster to people, as long as he is not trying to ATTACK me whenever I am home and near by.

To give you an idea of his current temperament.....I have now started just letting him out of the outside pen at night....I grab his lady and walk to the garage and he usually follows me. Once he is in the garage and next to his shed, I pick him up and put him away for the night. If he is going in the wrong direction, I can try to herd him the right way but if I reach for him he runs away from me. If I get him cornered and reach for him he will either try to go through me or come at me. I usually just walk around and try to point him in the right direction. In the mornings, I usually get his lady out of his pen and then grab him......that is difficult to do and usually as I reach for him he darts away and I have to basically grab him by his tail feathers (which points him in the right direction) with one hand pin down his body....then pick him up.

EVIL ROOSTER

yep i think about 6 months is right... maybe a bit later. and you could try the hold him and snuggle him approach to make sure he knows that you are both on the same side.

honestly Big Pansy is so nice and heavy and has such a great shape that i just like to carry him around.

Fred would peck my eyes out.

since you are kid-free just give him a go. he has beautiful coloring and wow that dark plume is going to be spectacular when he is full grown
:)

actually I have seen a chicken swim before I think it would of been fine if you would of left the water in it. I scared a rooster and he jumped in the lagoon and swam across.

I didnt read all of this, and didnt have time to right now, but I lost 2 chickens to empty bukets last winter. They were plain old five gallon buckets, which I used to tote feed in. I had a bad habit of leaving them there when they were empty. So when day I go in to pick up a bucket, and there was a chicken under it. She looked very bad... I pulled her out seperate but she never recovered and died the next day.

You'd think that would of learned me, but no, stupid me continued leaving empty buckets in there. I guess I considered it a one in a million, and it'd never happen again. But only a week later, it did. This time I took the bucket off to find an already dead Polish hen under it. Needless to say, I never leave buckets in the coop or run anymore.

Though I might update this (maybe this should be moved to the Pictures and Stories section?).......

Evil Rooster Crockpot is starting to chill out a little bit as far as me and his woman. He is still evil and overprotective. But he is starting to stand back and keep watch more than constantly standing just about on top of her trying to keep her away from everything.

You still have to get through him to get her, most of the time.

downsized_0610091912.jpg

But if it looks safe, he lets her have a little freedom.

downsized_0610091915.jpg

Now, if anything changes, he is there in a heartbeat while he calls her back behind him.

downsized_0610091914.jpg

But he is spending more time keeping watch these days.

downsized_0610091919a.jpg

He lets her peck and run around and do her thing, while he stands guard.

downsized_0610091917b.jpg

I pity the fool who tries to take a shot at his lady.

downsized_0610091916b.jpg

She knows where to go if things get a little iffy.

and sometimes its safer to just take pictures from this side of the fencing.
