We recently bought our dream farm and with our purchase we acquired 8 hens and one rooster. The hens are great and we enjoy them a lot. The whole bunch are rhode island reds. The rooster however from day one has charged, flown at us, and chased us down. We have tried the squirt gun to the face and that worked for awhile but yesterday he charged me even while getting squirted in the face. I was forced to jump in my vehicle to get away and he then proceeded to attack my car door! I like that he protects my flock and I have no doubt he would fight to the death for his hens. However Is there anything that can be done to halt and/or lessen his aggression towards us? I understand we are a new asset to the farm and it has probably shaken up his world a bit but its been ample time for him to adjust now. If there is no solution I fear he may need to be rehomed as I have a small child who has been attacked once already. Plus anytime we leave the house we have to be armed with a squirt gun or other item to defend ourselves with and I do not want to live like this forever. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. : )

Welcome to BYC! I'm sorry to say, but Rhode Islands is a very aggressive breed. I'm breeding them and they can be a pain in the neck. You'll probably want to replace him if he's just a bugger. Some can be nice, you just got the bad trait for the cock. Roosters also remember their owners faces and he probably doesn't recognize you. Are you able to catch him? I got attacked this morning by a cock but I'm going to butcher him in the fall. Just wait to get noticed, members are sure to help!

He needs to go. Either cull him yourselves or send him to someone who will. Mean birds taste best.

i recently bought 6 hens. 2 RIR, 2BR and 2 buckeyes. I am new to chickens and was hoping for a friendly flock. When I open the coop the BR run to me, the buckeyes are a little shy. One of the RIR looks like it is going to be a rooster. Hoping it is just developing faster than the other. I got them on Memorial day and he/she already has a comb popping out. It stays the farthest away from me, won't let me touch it and is a little bit bigger than the others. I am hoping it is not a rooster because I hear the RIR roosters are aggressive. Don't really want to kill it so I will give it a few months and hope that if it turns out to be a rooster it bucks the trend and is friendly. The comb has doubled since I took this picture
