ATTENTION! Chilling in muscadine and snakeman. :)

Oh man, Topaz is so awesome! I want a pet possum, haha. I've always tried getting my family to stop when I see a dead possum in the road, to check the pouch of course, but they never would. Now I drive, but I've yet to find one. Which is a good thing, of course!

They really are a lot of fun (and very easy to potty train).

Topaz developed a problem with his back legs (which I heard was from improper nutrition but he was the only one of 4 who had it happen) and we KNEW there was no way he could ever be wild, so we got him neutered. Wanted to avoid any problems with "male attitude" later. It was really funny looking for a vet willing to do it. We finally found one, though, and he took a pic of Topaz and hung it on his bulletin board with a sign saying "YES, we CAN neuter your opossum". It was too funny.

There were 5 siblings in that litter that survived the initial roadkill incident. One died that night and there were two males and two females left. The other male had no trouble deciding he was a wild animal and left as soon as he was able. My mother has one of the females and right now my two (Diamond and Topaz) are living with my Uncle. It was really too much with them, my cats, and my dog. He absolutely loves having them and spoils them rotten so it was a win/win situation.

Keep checking those pouches, you WILL eventually find babies. Man its so cool finding them. Plus you know if you don't save them they would die.

Topaz is just beautiful. Don't ya love how tame and friendy they are when you raise them? You are right about the nutrition thing. This is always why I have released them when they were old enough. I used to release them here on our property but now that I have all these chickens I will take them to my neighbors down the road to release them. They have several homes all through many miles, they are all farmers and love nature and stuff so they are safe there on there hundreds and hundreds of acres.

What kills me is it seems like everytime we stop to check out one of these road kill opossums, like right when we are right there checking out the pouch, somebody we know will drive by.

And let me just say that EVERYBODY knows who Snakeman is. We can't go anywhere without him being recognized. I don't know why I would think we would get some privacy when we were like, checking out the road kill.

O.K. it was totally embarassing when it first happened to me {I used to be a prissy city girl} but now I will just smile, through up my hand and wave. What the hay, right.

We love any type of nature. We have doctored on so many different creatures through the years. We both have a deep passion for it. Somebody started a rumor a few years back that I was a vet. "HUGH" Anyway the county we live in is a poor county and still weekly we have someone bring sick or injured animals or repliles to us thinking I am a vet.

I do keep many meds on hand that I might need for my personal use on my animals. These would be meds you can only get from the vet. My vet will always hook me up. He always tells me he will help me with anything I need as long as I promise to never bring a snake into his office.

Sounds like a blackmail thing I got going on.

I think this is how the rumor got started about me being a vet. Of course I will never turn my back on an animal in need. A lot of the people I have helped are really poor and seeing a vet would never happen because they would never be able to afford it. I do get a good feeling when I help these animals and there owners. At 48 years old I now know that I missed my calling. I should have went to vet school.

Isn't it amazing how clean opossums are when they have a clean place to live. I'm going through that now with my two pot bellied pigs that live in the house with me. Petunia is 7 1/2 mths and Stormy is 4 1/2mths now. They are my very first pigs and I'm loving having them.
