I knew a vet with a pit mix who said the Frito smell is from their natural flora (bacteria). It is common for adult pits, and some other breeds, but most puppies of all breeds have it too.

I think it's unfortunate that these dogs have the bad reputation that they do. I think a large part of the problem is that the media has deamed them as bad, so each story of a bite or mauling just HAS to be on the news. I have friends in the vet industry and never once have they had problems with the pit bulls, it's the smaller dogs like doxies and chihuahuas (sp) that bite them the most. My friend is a vet tech and she says they almost have to draw straws over who handles the cocker spaniels because they are prone to being more agressive when frightened. Remember back in the 70's when Dobermans were the "bad guy"? Everyone feared them.
I've never really been a fan of the pit bulls until my son adopted one the day before it was to be euthenized. Sadie is a fabulous ambassador for the breed, she has taught me so much about giving a breed a second chance. I still wouldn't buy one but that is only because Im stuck on my Irish Setters. Some people don't like Irish setters either, they think they are stupid...but I've never had a more intelligent breed. Missinformation is a big issue on so many breeds, so I hope your mom will give you a chance to show her the real story behind these dogs. Good luck!

I discovered that frito smell on my dog's feet when I was a kid...and every dog I've had and baby-sat for since then has had that same smell...it is so funny!

I read that a lot of reports on pitbull mixes attacking people might not be done by pitbull mixes.

This is because people sometimes, including the news reporters, assume that once a mixed breed dog attacks that it MUST have pitbull in its lineage even if it doesn't.

I had a friend who told me that she adopted two dogs. She informed me that although she 'discovered' that they had pitbull in them and gave them away. The way she discovered that they had pit bull in thier lineage was because they were aggressive. So, she simply assumed that a aggressive dog must have pit bull in its makeup.

I hope the way I worded that made sense.

So my sons think I am weird for asking them to smell the dog feet. Anyway, we do not think they smell like fritoes.
