You have the right to fire lazy people but you do not have the right to pay them less than minimum wage for being young or lazy.

Well, the government's rules and the right to fire lazy people was brought up in the course of discussion, I was just taking it a bit further

That kid doesn't "work for" the OP. There was no contract, no agreement. He helped out, she tipped him. It's not the same as employment in this case. She didn't have to give him 5 cents if she didn't want to.

As far as I can tell age only plays into this in 2 ways: First, his assumption that he would be paid without negotiating or securing an arrangement for that price before helping the OP, and second the rude and immature way he handled his dissapointment that the tip did not live up to his (unfounded because there was no agreement) expectations.

I've got a barn that needs to be mucked out this weekend, wood that needs to be hauled, trees that need to be cut down, garden space that needs to be tilled and field stones removed. Since you are all so big on 'well helping is just what people do', I'm sure I can expect you all promptly at 6am Saturday morning. It's much better for me to just take advantage of you than it would be for me to pay the professionals who have quoted me around $400 to get it all done. I'll just make lemonade and rhubarb pie instead. It's the weekend, you've got nothing better to do than sit around and catch up on soap operas and sports events. This thread has made it clear to me that I am entitled to your help.

Last week my 16 yr old DS was asked to 'help' out with re-roofing a house for DH's best bud. He of course said yes cause he's just a good kid.
He worked Wed, Thurs, Fri and Sat for a total of about 30 hours. The boy busted his butt. Dh's buddy commented that he could outwork most grown men.

And at the end of the job, he gave DS.... $300.00!! $10.00 and hour for the work that he did.

DS was dumb-founded! He had volunteered to help just to be a good kid and was pleasantly surprised by the added bonus.
He had been happy just to get all the Gatorade he could drink, meals and snacks...lol.

My point is that I am so glad that DH's bud waited until the end to pay him cause it gave DS the opportunity to know what it felt like just to help out and be a good neighbor.

No, Prettiest Frog I don't think that I would like to work for you; however, as a kid I did help an elderly neighbor widow with her poultry operation. Why? Because it was the right thing to do, and I enjoyed. There are altruistic people in the world. Just as there are some who consistently are argumentative with bad attitude.

Wow. How sad that you feel that way....

We trade jobs all of the time...DH helped put a roof on a buddy's house last week and got nothing other than free meals and snacks.
Same buddy will be coming over and helping me if needed while DH is away at a work related training for 4 weeks during the busiest time of the year here at our house.
I will be sure to have some lemonade made for him but I wont be pulling out my wallet.

Camelot Farms, absolutely the type of environment that I grew up in. Sad to me how values have changed over the years.
