Auction goers: Tip your helpers? (rant)

Not old or crazy - I just thought that people like to help eachother and a few bucks would be appreciated.
Also: What is this idea that time in front of the T.V is so valuable and work is so awful!?!
Ann Landers said that no one can take advantage of you w/o your permission. I think that alot of people like to cry "Foul" without articulating THEIR expectations. In the future, I will articulate mine. The kid can choose b/t video games and (1) learning about technical aspects of electric and mechanical, plus (2) a few bucks (equal to what he'd clear at the Gap in a day) and (3) a supportive family atmosphere (food, treats, advice, job references, etc.) I think that many, many people are VERY defensive, very worried that their toil will be for naught. So, they sit and wait! My older brother quit a job (in the 1980s) cuz he thought that washing semis should garner him more than minimum wage. He has been couch surfing off & on since. (Twenty years!) I am different - have been happy to work & volunteer. I would never stand for being DISRESPECTED, but I will muck out a stall... Why not? Dancing With the Stars hasn't called.

My life has been very successful because I am not too good to work. Plus, I trust people. My good deeds get rewarded all the time(!) All the time! I do not have a big attitude. I have reflected on this for two days. I don't think I disrespected or overworked this guy. I expect to see his grouchy little face at the mall (and not at the Chamber of Commerce) in the future.

I appreciate EVERY OPINION expressed, here. Every one!

On the subject I go to auctions and I don't make that much after the cut to be able to tip auction workers. Quite frankly tipping has gotten out of hand. Even in the resturant business us good tippers make up for the bad tippers.

Off the subject. I intend to hire some workers for help around the place and I fully intend to ask "how much an hour do you want?" I'll throw in lunch but I don't want anyone saying they got cheated. Todays' youth want things handed to them. The government to pay and the government will. After the governement puts a ring through their noses.

Stuff like this makes it easy to understand why so many older adults have a problem with my generation.
Like RoPo said, some of us 20somethings and younger LIKE hard work, thank you very much

We're just the minority, apparently.

Again age has nothing to do with it. It does not matter what he had to do that day or what bills he had to pay. If you are assuming that you should not have to pay as much for a teen to do the same job as you would a 35 year old then yes that means you are trying to take advantage of him. His time no mater how he had planned to use it is just as valuable as someones in there 30s.

Then I guess we just disagree.

I sure as heck wouldn't pay my 15 year old sister as much as my 50+ year old FIL, coz she's simply not worth as much work. She might help me for 5 hours one afternoon, and he might help me for 5 hours one afternoon, but I won't get near the same amount of hard labor out of her coz she's lazy.

I wouldn't be taking advantage. I'd be paying the value that I placed on the amount of work done, not the time put into it. For example if I got her to help me, we might haul one truck load of wood in an afternoon's time. If I got my FIL to help me, we might cut down a tree, saw it up, pile the brush for burning and THEN haul one truck load of wood

Many people would agree with you but not the government. Thats why we have child labor laws an minimum wage laws. You have the right to fire lazy people but you do not have the right to pay them less than minimum wage for being young or lazy.

Fortunately I'm not running a business, and I don't have to give a rat's patoooey about what the govenrment thinks. The truth is, I'm smart enough to hire the better worker for the harder jobs.

If you want to talk turkey though, lets discuss how the government makes small businesses NOT want to fire the lazy people because then they'll just draw unemployment off of them

The kids here in the U.S. think their "helping somebody out" is actually a job that they should get paid for. Unless a wage is discussed before the job is started, they should be grateful you did anything for them. On another note, if you where to hire one of those people that come here from Mexico that will do any work for any wage and be grateful for it. You wouldn't have the situation your in now. Granted I feel that people from other countries shouldn't be able to come here and work but if it wasn't for them, many jobs wouldn't get done for nobody willing to do them.

The kids these days have it too easy. They have all these gadgets and gizmos to play with and don't even have to work for them. They think chores are asking too much of them. When they do get a job, they are very picky about what it is. They refuse to do any labor if they can get out of it. They want to text their friends instead of work and it only gets worse as they get older.

I wouldn't ask any kids for help. I'd find somebody willing to do the job for a set price and leave it at that. It's better than feeling like you did something wrong because of a greedy kid.
