Augsburger Thread!

I love the way these guys look... they look almost melanistic... with their black legs and beaks. I just got them and have been amazed at their curiosity and the easy way they settled in.

I saw these on the local Craigslist for sale (I think they are your birds TNBEARCHICK). I've never heard of the breed and really can't find much information on them. Can you give a brief wikipedia-like description of the breed?

They are a Bavarian light breed in 2000 there was only 24 Rooster and 112 hens in the world. They have a duplex comb, slate legs, lay large numbers of white eggs roosters go about 6# and hens 5# give or take. We plan on replacing our layers with these but so far nearly everything we hatch from our breeders sell, the only problem I have had selling is not having enough to feel larger orders.

How would they compare to something like a Black Australorp? I know they have brown eggs and lack the buttercup comb but for the non-collector is there any advantage of having Augsburger over some of the more common (and cheaper) breeds? I totally understand the desire to have something rare or unusual but I was wondering if there are any other advantages to the breed.

If you are just wanting egg production it is hard to beat a Leghorn but these offer a better looking bird than some other birds, rare of course and should lay a high number of light colored eggs. Oh did I mention they are gorgeous also. I just love the Duplex comb also, which only manifests on about a third of the Augs but we are running about half and plan on breeding towards 75% - 100%.

So if pairing 2 buttercup combs give 25% horn, 25% straight, 50% duplex/buttercomb, what if you breed buttercup/duplex and straight?

I have to wonder if these statistics are correct, we have never hatched out a horn comb and so far we have hatched about 25 chicks and in our birds we received from GFF we never had a horn comb.
