August 2016 Hatch-A-Long

31 of 54 coturnix hatched so far. One pipped on the wrong end a couple of hours ago. I dont want to open the bator so this one's in God's hands. It's still peeping, I hope it figures it out by morning.

9/10 hatched and in the brooder as we move into day 23. The last egg has pipped and shows some progress. Hopefully a little fluffball will be looking back at me in the morning.

I candled my speckled Sussex eggs yesterday. 2 clears and 8 quitters, so I have 8 developing. I hope all hatch, though most will be sold. I only plan to keep one or two. It's nice to have extras to sell and make some money back, though. I suppose I'll hop over to the September hatch along but check back here as well to follow the progress.

Tonight will mark day 19 for some eggs and day 20 for the others. We got 44 of 54 coturnix hatched and lost one that pipped and died. Will float test the remaining this evening and wrap it up.
Ended up with pharaoh, a&m, golden, silver and cinnamon, and 5 different tux colorations.

2 more of mine hatched late last night, and 2 pipped this morning, if they hatch I will have 6 out of 12. 50% hatch rate with my styrofoam cooler incubator. Not bad but if I ever decide to incubate again, I'm gonna buy a incubator! And plan it

I ended up helping my last chick hatch yesterday. It managed to pip a hole big enough to fit it's whole head through. There was no getting around that. It is a bit deformed, but I am going to support it until tonight to see if it can straighten out.

what do you mean deformed?
It's not just simply splay-legged, one leg was twisted and behind it's back. It's spine also seems to be bent. I'm supporting it now, hobbling it's legs and have it in a cup/sling set up to try to get it to build it's standing muscles, but I am not optimistic at this point. It's hard, because I know what one of my broody hens would have done. I'll do the best I can to help it, but it is not looking good.
