August 2022 Hatch-a-long

Pics
My cousin lived in Fayettville and I lived in Perryville for a bit after college before heading back north to stay.

My eggs all hatched before today, so I technically made the July hatch group though today was day 21. All 6 hatched and we lost one baby overnight last night. The rest are running, eating, drinking and pooping! Made them a ramp tonight to get out of the coop and will be opening up the enclosure door tomorrow morning. Was going to do it today but needed to put down some fresh mulch and build a ramp, then my kids needed to eat and some attention and they have been neglected since the 1st chick came Sat :gig
Good luck with the ramp. Hopefully your chicks cooperate better than mine. My mamas stayed in the coop 3-6 days with them. Well think it was 6.... One mama was very cautious. The one I gave chicks to went out the following day... One ended up outside my run and I still have no clue how it happened as it is secure, nothing else has ever made it out, there are zero holes... But I got it in and both mom and baby stayed next to each other with the hwc between them. After that she stayed in another few days. Lol

Who has eggs set to hatch in Aug?
I do! Two batches, in fact!

I've had 34 chicken eggs in one incubator, a styrofoam still-air by Miller Mfg. with no turner (except by me). They go on lockdown tomorrow, for hatching on Fri. Aug. 5 :jumpy I'm so anxious about this batch, because the incubator belongs to a friend, who's had horrible luck with it. I offered to check it out, test it, try to calibrate and figure out what's going wrong. After a couple of weeks trying different things, I believe the problem is too high humidity, and I could never get consistent readings even with 3 different hygrometers. So... I'm trying a "dry hatch" with very little water, in a tiny cup, one in each corner. I didn't like how the eggs on the outside edges stayed cooler than those in the middle, so I added cushions of paper towels all around them to make a kind of 'nest' and retain heat more evenly. I rotate eggs from the outside to the center as I turn them. Tomorrow morning, I'll add water into one channel, and keep a close eye on humidity then. Lockdown!

Then, tonight I also set 12 more eggs in my trusty little Kebonnixs incubator, for hatch on Aug. 21-22. I'll follow standard protocol in this one. I've always had a 90-100% success rate. (Pay no mind to the digital readings in this pic. I had literally just put the eggs in and placed the lid. Wish them luck!

I just add more containers of water and put a sponge/rag in them, it helps to boost the humidity at hatch time.

Colored egg #1: Unfortunately, this one seems dead, no visible veins, just the circled darker spot where I think the blood gathered. There were veins earlier today.
