August Hatch-A-Long

They probably won’t actually be late. Fingers crossed!!!

I did that last hatch and actually had better hatch rates from the group that came late and didn’t rest. In addition, my eggs from my duck hatch WERE late over a holiday weekend. I also did not rest those eggs. That was my best shipped hatch rate ever, like 80%.

On both I left them upright in the incubator for three days and then I started turning. I see a lot of people say they wait a full 7 days with shipped eggs but it makes me nervous I’ve seen multiple studies that say days 4-7 are the most important in turning.

Go go go!!!! Yay!

Omg good luck and WOW all the breeds!!!!

Lol, Nevermind you already answered. :D

I checked the tracking number on my shipped egg's for the latest update, and it said that delivery could be late. Now usually when I have shipped egg's, I let them sit in egg carton's to rest for the air-cell's to settle. I was wondering if it would be ok to just add them to my incubator in the turner without turning the turner on for a few day's?

Thats what i did with my recent leghorn hatch, and had an amazing hatch (for shipped eggs)!! 8 out of 13 hatched-66% hatch rate, not bad for shipped eggs!

And this morning i went out to the brooder, and a rat snake had climbed in thru the wiring into the brooder, and ate 6 out of the nine chicks in there.:duc:rant:mad:
Boy did i teach that snake a lesson (with an axe and a machete)!!!
my best mouser cat recently and I want to move in the near future so replacing a cat would be a burden. I never take an outdoor cat when I move they belong to the outdoors and do not cooperate with moving to a new area. I worry with a prolific mouser not keeping down the rodent population that a snake might move into the urban homestead. Not my favorite pest to deal with at all.

now you have a real choice to make, intervening may be needed but it can also cause problems with the other chicks. At this point in my hatching experience I tend to go with the let it be and see what happens. That doesn't mean that is the best option its just from my experience every time I try to fix one problem after lockdown I create 5 new problems

@Compost King You’re right, it’s a crapshoot. I’m not super comfortable opening this incubator during hatch because it’s new to us. I don’t have a good grip on getting the humidity back up fast yet. The Brinsea, I would have opened in a heartbeat.

I’ve been trying to see if it managed to break the membrane, and not just push the shell to crack—which I’ve seen happen a few times. If there is a hole, I’ll feel better about waiting a while to see. Probably wrongly so. But it being able to get air feels like a good thing at this point. FWIW I don’t see any blood on the membrane.

Eventually I am going to set my incubators up in a bathroom so if I have to enter during lock down I can run hot water and make the whole room all warm and steamy with a very high humidity. unfortunately my house is a one bathroom house and the bathroom is about the size of a walking closet, I can't even store my toilet paper in the bathroom let alone an incubator. It was actually a selling point to me when I bought the house, I figured with a smaller bathroom the rooms I actually spend time and use would be bigger. I never thought I would have a 2nd use for a bathroom when I bought this house.

It’s a great idea, if you can do it. I kept my Brinsea in the bathroom. I loved having it there!! The new incubator is in the garage where it is cool, and there isn’t running water. It makes it much more challenging.
