August Hatch-A-Long

lol, Oops, I did it again. :lau

Omg. I was just thinking this morning there’s no way you don’t have something in your incubator. :lau

My hatch is set for August 1. I’m still trying to figure out my fall meat birds and hatching schedule so I doubt I’ll hatch again in august. But you never know. Whenever I get a chance to drive west a few hours, I’m picking up Wheaten Marans eggs. :D

Good luck everybody!!!

Just out of curiosity, anyone who hatches their own eggs, how long after a pullet comes into lay do you wait to hatch?

I wait until the egg look's about normal sized, because I want to make sure that the chick will have enough room in there to hatch normal.

I’ve just finished my first hatch and only got 3 birds and a ton of experience. But I’ve been reassured that’s good For a first hatch.5 hatched and 3 survivors out of 10 eggs. I dropped 2!!!! I had the success from a mixed batch with crested cream leghorns and black copper Maran. I have ordered 6 Legbar and 6 black copper marans eggs which will arrive Saturday and I’ll start next week. Having had to cull 2 damaged birds I feel I can now cope with anything.

I swear my Incubators were empty for days! Lol! I even have a couple boxes out to store some of them. :lau
I traded the 2 sweet mystery mutts for these lovely Blue/Black/Splash Marans eggs!

Im so jealous of people, my wife has put her foot down about hatching more eggs till ive reduced the flock we have.
I will more than likely be prioritising my buff brahmas, they are 9 weeks now and are the tamist most docile breed ive ever known..... just those and my lavender araucanas.
If i do any more it will be some CCL`s i think

Ah, the voice of reason. I hate it when that happens. Lol!
For me, I end up selling so many chicks that I never keep as many as I plan on keeping. I just tell myself I can hatch some more! Out of 127 chicks hatched this year, I've only kept 5 to the point of being fully feathered so far, so my husband isn't allowed to say anything to me! :lau:jumpy

I don’t believe you, prove it!:lau I have 2 blue, and 2 whatever color Marans in the incubator now too. Not being able to see anything when candling is so frustrating!

This is the closest I can get to proof. My favorite incubators are stored in the chicken cabinet and there's now only one lonely incubator running in the chicken room! The only reason I'm using the IncuView is because it's easier to clean and I've been sanitizing incubators all year, lol! I'm going to clean up the Hovabator that was given to me and run it next to the IncuView instead of the Little Giant for back up and to see if I can get it working satisfactorily, definitely NOT to fill with eggs...until next month maybe.:gig

What kind of candler do you use? It's really hard to see into Marans eggs regardless but I can definitely tell fertility by about day 8-10 with a little high lumen flashlight.

I bought a high intensity candler made for dark eggs from amazon. The candler on my incubator was great for light eggs and I could see the air cells in the dark eggs last time but I am going to set 6 blue/black Maran eggs next week as well as 6 cream leg bars. I changed my mind about the auracana eggs because I had made a stupid eBay click mistake out of excitement then did the research. Aurancanas are very difficult to,hatch and if I did they'd be most likely to run away as they need large areas to roam. I do have a large garden but not acres. I've asked to cancel, otherwise I'm going to have to make the fanciest egg dish ever to make it worth the money for the eggs and postage
