August Hatch-A-Long

This is the update on my hobbled chick. After talking to multiple people local to me, not only do I feel that much more confident that @Mixed flock enthusiast was accurate in her diagnosis but a friend of mine decided I have dementia because I actually helped her with a chick that she had with the same condition. View attachment 1912489 I helped her set up a mug with a sling and little food and water cups for her chick. This was prior to me hatching chicks on my own so I'm pleading the fifth!
I wasn't able to make a timely appointment with a vet that will see chickens and I had already lost time dillydallying while assuming the issue was with the neck so I did try home treatment by wrapping the leg but I was unsuccessful (probably would have gone better had I been doing that since day one) so now my goal is to give her a decent one-legged chicken life. All 8 of the chicks my friend hatched from the same batch are healthy...so now my real concern is that one of the newer hens in my flock must be an aggressor. Possibly between me checking in when the chick was showing weakness early on after hatch there must have been an opportunity for an attack. This is becoming an increasingly likely situation considering my hen did appear to accept the 3 chicks from my last hatch as well and as you all know the result was terrible then too and yet she hasn't shown any aggression that I've witnessed other than accidentally stepping on this chick. Sigh, so I'll be utilizing my broody pen 100% of the time until I find the culprit. This would be a prime example why people recommend separating their broody hens, so I guess I'll now need to subscribe to that method as well at least for the initial few days before allowing the hens to intermingle with their chicks as I did with my first couple broody hens. Just as an extra precaution.

Awww, she’s such a beautiful little chick!!! :love I’m sorry that you haven’t been able to help the leg. The wildlife vet that I consulted with had me using K tape on that keet to try to nudge the tendon in place, not that it worked... I’m very curious to hear how your chick does long term! My keet had both legs affected so it would have had a very difficult life. I don’t know much about one legged fowl!

@jolenesdad , I think you have already answered this question for me before but where did you get the hatching eggs for the Opal Legbars again? I'm writing it down this time, promise. lol, I love my Frosted Legbar so much! I need a Cream and an Opal now!

Yes you do!!! My opals are the sweeeeeetest.

I’m so glad that frost is a girl!

I got them from Candace Waldon. She originated them. There’s an Opal Legbar group on Facebook that she runs. She is active and informative. You can direct message her and she should get it.

Omg also.... that broiler chick... such a fighter. Very perky and alert always and I was just about to give up but today she is trying to stand and use her legs. I can’t believe it. I have feed around her and I have to take her to water every few hours. She is a heritage-style broiler so if she does pull through she will be a forever chicken.

I’m going to make the worst farmer.

She really is so beautiful and elegant!!! I just love your frosted CCL!:love Cream CCLs are one of our favorite breeds, but sadly we are down to one hen, plus her crossbreed kids! One of whom may have just started laying a lovely olive egg! I’ll have to watch the nest box this weekend...

Yaaaay!!! So glad to hear that she's pulling through!!! And thank you for the info on the Legbars, again. Lol

Y'all! One SOLID WEEK of splay leg treatments, and hand feeding EVERYTHING and she is STANDING and drinking her own water!!!!Poor thing still looks like a 2 or 3 day old chick, and is half the size of her hatchmates. If she pulls through, I guess I'll just have to find her some appropriately sized friends. ;):lau

Woooop!

It looks like this one leg I should have splinted the foot longer, it looks slightly curled still. She has been out of the splints for three days. Should I do that now, or has too much time passed?

I personally feel like getting her to stand on those legs is vastly more important than a slightly curled foot since it's mostly straight. Thoughts? I know she will go right back to laying on her side if I bind that foot again.

Awwww!! Look at that sweet little fluff puff! I have a hen that was saved from a feed store that had terribly mangled toes. Splinting was definitely started later in the game but it was mostly fixed and she still has a wonky toe and functions perfectly fine. So I guess I'm saying it's both probably not too late to try but if it's minor she'll also likely function perfectly fine. Great job working with her!!! She's so lucky to have you!!

Hi guys I have I question if this is the right place. I have some hatching eggs that I had shipped in and I don't know exactly what to do with them. I plan on putting them under a broody hen that I have. they re chicken eggs of course.! also I have a incubator.

I am waiting for someone else to help you, my success rate with shipped eggs is less than 10%. But if no one responds with advice I will offer up what I do.
