hopefully I'll get most of them to hatch. I'm so eggscited!! Went to the feed store yesterday to grab another waterer and there was a gentleman and his kids selling lionhead baby bunnies, muscovy ducks in assorted colors and chicks! Including an absolutely adorable blue cochin. I wanted it so bad! But.....I resisted.

I really wish Hubby hadn't been there with me. He said absolutely not so I didn't...I would have anyway if I thought it was a girl but it had a decent little comb going already and the guy himself said he thought it was a boy...of course he was trying to sell me both the cochin chicks he had as a potential breeding pair, a black and the blue.

But alas I will get my chick fix when my Banty's hatch...and my cochin from Meyer in Feb.

Hubby hates chicken math.

On the late chicks - I have read that the science behind why they pip is that they begin to have too little oxygen and too much carbon dioxide which causes muscle spasm. Theoretically if you have very large eggs, good air cells, and the eggs aren't totally stuffed with chick then maybe it takes them longer to run out of oxygen?

Mine weren't actually breech but one of the other malpositions. I find this chart really helpful http://www.thepoultrysite.com/artic...-hatchery-practice-examining-the-hatch-debris

Here is all four of my baby chicks.

In order from left to right... Chip (breech chick), Unnamed so far Chick #3, Butterscotch, and Sunshine.
According to the wing feather method of sexing, Chip is a boy the other three are girls. I kind of feel its true because chip has a comb already so big it parts his hair on his head, the other three have tiny little combs. We will see when they grow up. I think Chip looks like Speckled Sussex babies, and the other three are looking like New Hampshire Red babies. What do you think???

I have one chick going in to lockdown tomorrow, then 15 newborn silkie babies should be arriving Friday morning, then 18 silkie eggs and 2 of my own eggs going in to lockdown on 19th. Then I am done for a while!!!
OMG they're so CUTE!!! I love the little brown guy.

They are very big eggs and they still have the small end empty and clear on all but one. I see feet and feathers but no pip inside or out. I've read longer gestation in humans can increase IQ, EInstein was 3 weeks late. Maybe I will have genius chicks.

Great news on all the chicks. I locked mone down officially when I got home from work. Looks like I might have an internal pip so now it is watch and wait. Thnkfully I don't have to work tomorrow!

Go chicks--hope we get more hatching. I know I am a nervous Nellie now!

I think chip is adorable , but they all are. Was he from the green egg? If so he is an easter egger.

I read your link. Great information. Now I know what happened last time I helped out. The feet were over the head.

My chickens now are pretty smart. I have one that uses the doggie door when I'm not looking. She doesn't like to roost outside. If I am late putting them away I will find her in the laundry room on top of the brooder. SHe is one of my favorites and head chicken.

Hiya All!

Sorry in advance for the long post but I have just switched from the July thread to this one!

Last hatch with some local eggs was good and I got these 3 little wonders:

400

They are all doing really well!

I have also just ordered 4 different batches of eggs to put in two of my incubators - 1 is new!!

The order was as follows:

6 X Buff Orpington eggs

6 X Welsummer eggs

6 X Lavender Orpington eggs

6 X Cream Legbar eggs

All in all, I think this is a nice variety and am hoping at least half will hatch.

I ordered them just now so should arrive on the 6th or 7th and then have a couple of days to rest before I put them in on the 9th when I return from holiday.

They will then be due the evening of the 30th which is 1 day before my birthday on the 31st!!

I am excited - wondering what you all thought of my plans, and egg selection?

Good luck to all!
