August Hatch-A-Long!

OK, I opened the iffy eggs and sure enough they were dead. Most look like they died before yolk absorption (still swimming in liquid), one partially absorbed, two yolk absorbed, and one more that had pipped the membrane (and maybe a blood vessel since there was a little bit of blood) but not the shell before dying. One of the chicks had a really big head. I don't know if that would have been a genetic defect and possibly the reason it died. The one egg that I thought could have had a live chick in it still, I saved for last. And it is still alive! It still hasn't pipped the inner membrane yet so it's back in the bator with a wet paper towel around it to increase the humidity and keep that membrane soft and moist.

Well, it's day 10 for my babies. Candled tonight and I have 16 viable silkie eggs.
These are my Catdance eggs. I'm really happy with them at the moment. Especially since they came through the post office in July!

Going into lockdown tonight in the hatcher for batch 2:

1 Rhode Island White cross egg with movement in it
2 Blue Marans cross eggs with movement in them
6 Welsummer eggs with definite movement in them
and 3 Welsummer eggs Ihave my doubts about, but that are sucha darkly colored shell I can't assure there is no life in them - so taking a chance.

All of the Welsummer eggs were shipped to me from Tennessee - so the odds of them being successful are greatly reduced thanks to rough handling by the USPS. And I should have replacement chicks arriving next week I believe - please let us have a cool spell???

In the incubator 11 Barred Rock also shipped from Tennessee, but only on day 3. Leaving them alone for a while.

Buying shipped eggs is a crap shoot but I like to increase my odds by buying from the closest 'reputable' breeder, whether that is on eBay or not. I just meant if I couldn't personally verify their reputation I wouldn't buy from ebay because eBay is so full of scam sellers.

I agree with you 100% . But since there isn't a lot of breeders near me that I can find I figured I'd take a chance. Tried to find a seller that wasn't halfway across the US and had a good feedback rating. I liked this one especially because there was a few follow ups posting on eggs saying they had good hatch rates. Could have been a scam but most scammers on there don't tend to think quite that far into details. :p Heaven knows I've been fooled before though. Still the price was right and I felt lucky. Lol
