August Hatch-A-Long!

Guess what??? Somehow the post office was able to make up the lost day due to weather in MO and my Silkie babies arrived in our post office today!!! It appears they took a plane ride because there is an airline sticker on the box.

The post master in our post office opened the box when they arrived and gave them a drink of water, figuring they were pretty thirsty sine they were born on Tuesday. Is that thoughtful or what? I will have to post pictures later when I am at my desktop because for some reason I can't embed images anymore with my iPad...I could before so this is weird. Maybe I will try to embed a video...lets see.

Anyway, I ordered 15 and they sent 18 in case some died. All were alive. Very thirsty (they drank over an ounce of electrolyte water in the first hour) and hungry too, but so far all alive. They are so tiny! I put my newborn homegrown chick in the brooder at the same time because she is so small, the size of a 3 day old bantam silkie, lol. She blends right in with them.

I am in baby chick heaven!

Oh, I also candled my Catdance silkie eggs and two more homegrowns. I had 7 silkies that did not develop and 3 silkies that have a blood ring, the other 8 silkies and homegrowns have now all been moved to the Brinsea where they will finish out their time until their due date on the 21st.

Now I have big time crusty butt patrol to do, then the hubby and I are going out for a romantic dinner...today is out 10th Anniversary! Hope all your hatches go well tonight and all sick babies are feeling better

Adorable! And Congrats on your anniversary!

this morning and last nights picture think she/he will make it. it is a legbar girl or boy. At first I thought girl than boy now girl?????????
(S)he looks much better! It amazes me how strong these little guys can be.
My problem chickie died, made no progress absorbing the sack. I think there may have been issues with the sack but who knows. It had been wrapped around her leg with her leg over her head so who knows.

I'm sorry.

Pip finally managed to make it out of her shell early this morning.

Here she is!!

And the speedy one that zipped, hatched and started running around the bator in a span of 15 minutes.

I haven't seen any action from the other 5 eggs that are still in the incubator. Today is officially hatch day so I'll give them a few more days before I give up. I'm just so happy I have these two! Although Pip is going to be getting a boot later. Her toes are curled on one foot and speedy still has a small lump on her naval. I THINK it's part of the yolk sack that hadn't absorbed. It's a little smaller today and doesn't seem to be affecting her movement si I'll leave it be and see what happens...although I haven't seen her poop yet.

well the eggs get poop and stuff on them...the mommas are so sweet they turn them and keep them tucked under them....if they get off their nest they stay close...if anything or anyone goes towards it the run with their feathers all frizzled out back to the nest!
Awe. One of my silkies is nicer than the other and she doesn't complain too much when I have to go in to take her out and clean the nest out (I've found poop in there). But the other does the typical voicing of her complaints, fluffs up and pecks at me. So I don't bother them unless I need to. It's funny bc since they've gone broody the other youngins (5 mo olds) want to be in there seeing that's going on. I can't ever find them in the main chicken run bc they're in there with the broody's. Idk what they are yet, but I THINK they're females. It's so hard to tell with silkies.

I have 1 silkie bantam , I think she's a splash, she's 3 weeks old...her name is Calico...anyway I have 6 silver and gold laced polish silkies due to hatch the 19th....6 shipped all 6 going strong!! hope they all hatch! not likely though...going to be so gorgeous

I'll be pulling for those hatchlings. I've got 6 of my own being shipped, should arrive at PO tomorrow- they're porcelain & lavender silkies.... I'm scared with the shipped ones, hope they hatch too!

Congrats! They are adorable! :jumpy

If I try to drop my humidity how fast is too fast? Should I bring it down slow or is 15% at once too much? Its day 7 and my humidity went from 35-38% to 50-52% in the last 2 days due to rain storms and such.....

Love all the new babies!!

My beloved Blue Breda eggs came today. I set them on the counter and have been having a staring contest with them all day. I gave them a thorough talking to about what their job is.

I posted on another thread too because I want some hand holding for these, LOL!

HERE are my precious Blue Breda shipped eggs. They arrived at my house at 7:20 AM with none broken and have set big end up in an open bottom egg carton for about 15 hours. I was not crazy about the packing job (which I shared with the seller). It was the same as my Barred Rock which so far appear to have only 3 of 14 developing :/ Each egg was carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and paper towel, but they were floating loose in cut newspaper and I guess due to weight distribution they pretty much all had settled with the big end (air cell) down inside the box. I just candled the 18 eggs (appreciate the many extras!) and of the 18 there are three with no air cell that I can detect so don't know if it is scrambled or ?? 6 have detached air cells that form large saddles - some all the way down to the other end of the egg. 1 has a completely rolling air cell. And 8 appear to be pretty good from the looks of it. So what do I do with them? Do I set them all and see what happens by day 10 - or am I asking for another disastrous hatch if I set any but the 8 good looking ones. Step by step - advise me please.
