August Hatch-A-Long!

Well the last egg out of the six did quit. I had a bad feeling because he died after I moved the incubator to a different location and it moved around a little. He usually moved a little but after day 21 I candled it and put it in 100 deg F water to check for movement and there was none :(. but there is 1 more egg that still has 6 more days left and I am going to do all I can not to be gentle with the egg and not move it. Keep an eye out on the temp. I don't think I am going to candle it until after 21 days so I don't disturb it. I do have a hen sitting on a clutch so I hope she doesn't have the same luck.lol
hens trample all over the eggs in the nest...it's not because it wiggled it just happens...you can expect losses! hope you have a great hatch

My last chick died. Don't know why. I went to the post office to pick up more eggs of course, stopped by the grocery store and when I got home, the chick was already dead. Fine when I left. Other two are fine.

I cleaned out my bad eggs to make room for the new. I have tossed so many but things are definately getting better.

Hello, my name is Deanna and I'm an Eggaholic. (chickaholic or hatchaholic?) I think we need to decide what to call ourselves, not that there will ever be any meetings because I don't think anyone has any plans of recovery.
I'm so glad you posted your list...you are a least as bad as me

last chick I had hatch on day 19 died from prolapse LOL I must be the only one that doesn't want my chicks to hatch yet.

I'm done after this month...I want all my babies to be months old as we head into winter! I haven't even counted how many babies I have lol
Same here, I want to have fully feathered babies rolling into the winter. these last 2 years have been pretty mild but we do get snow on occasion, which I'm guessing we're due for some this year. Broody is sitting on 9 eggs so they should be hatching at the end of this month. This thread is off the chain I can't even keep up, every time I check there has been about 240 new posts every day LOL Guess we have to get it all out before fall? I plan on doing this every year! this is so much fun!!

Love all the new babies!!

My beloved Blue Breda eggs came today. I set them on the counter and have been having a staring contest with them all day. I gave them a thorough talking to about what their job is.

I posted on another thread too because I want some hand holding for these, LOL!

HERE are my precious Blue Breda shipped eggs. They arrived at my house at 7:20 AM with none broken and have set big end up in an open bottom egg carton for about 15 hours. I was not crazy about the packing job (which I shared with the seller). It was the same as my Barred Rock which so far appear to have only 3 of 14 developing

Each egg was carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and paper towel, but they were floating loose in cut newspaper and I guess due to weight distribution they pretty much all had settled with the big end (air cell) down inside the box. I just candled the 18 eggs (appreciate the many extras!) and of the 18 there are three with no air cell that I can detect so don't know if it is scrambled or ?? 6 have detached air cells that form large saddles - some all the way down to the other end of the egg. 1 has a completely rolling air cell. And 8 appear to be pretty good from the looks of it. So what do I do with them? Do I set them all and see what happens by day 10 - or am I asking for another disastrous hatch if I set any but the 8 good looking ones. Step by step - advise me please.

I would PM Sally Sunshine :) It's worth a shot to hatch these Good luck! sorry to hear about your loss, the ones that survive we appreciate that much more.

LOL! Stuff I don't even think about. Here in Texas we don't generally see cold till about January.

Could be genetics, or too old of a hen too. Incubator irregularities could probably effect things too. So sorry about the embryos dying :(

The hen is only a year old, so it shouldn't be age. I'm thinking that if it was incubator problems then the others would have this problem too..or at least some of them. It's only from this particular hen. At first I thought it could be that the eggs were too old, but it even happened with one that went straight from the nest box to the bator. Ugh! It's so frustrating trying to figure this out! If it weren't for the fact that I really want some of her babies for our breeding project I wouldn't be as concerned. :/
