August Hatch-A-Long!

I have heard people say to only have from an egg from a hen laying full size consistently.  But I've also  had people tell me the eggs from young chickens just starting to lay (the smaller eggs) are better.  What do you guys think?

My young hen and cockerel produce tiny eggs compared to a full grown hens eggs. The baby that hatched so far is very tiny, smaller than my silkie babies. It hatched out perfectly on its own.

The information I have gotten is that the small eggs do not give enough room for the chick to grow and hatch. I do not set pullet eggs. gives me the creeps to think there may be a growing chick that runs out of room and dies as a result. Others may have a different opinion............ You could also write hatching pullet eggs into search and see what comes up..... Good Luck

The chick in my tiny egg was a tiny chick to match so I don't believe the big chick in a small egg theory. It's smaller than my silkie babies.

Update on my 9 hatchlings that died - remember I was afraid the symptoms matched pullorum and had put in a call to out epidemiologist? I just got off the phone with the specialist and he said he feels very strongly that this was just a result of them being shipped eggs and the severe heat they were subjected to in transit, possibly combined with some kind of humidity issue with the dark/thick shells of Welsummers. So THAT is GREAT news! He said normally the chicks would start dying around 10 - 14 days if it was pullorum. So that is good news for my other chicks in the brooder - but not such good news for the 3 batches of shipped eggs I have going on :/ Wish me luck that they turn out better - I am trying new things with them like not turning for the first 5 days. Knock on wood....

That is Great news for your flock!

There is a non violent method of euthanizing your chick using baking soda and vinegar in a small bucket or jar. It is quick and doesn't require physically handling the chick to do it.
I hope to not have to use it any time soon, especially on my first go round, but could you give me instructions on that method (for a rainy day.... a long LONG ways from now I hope).

I think my next endeavor will be to get some frizzle cochin bantams.

I have some frizzle cochins in an incubator now. I can't wait to se those little curly feathers.
How can you hear them? I feel like I need a stethoscope. I'm on day 19 but not hearing anything... I don't think.

I'm waiting on a stethoscope from ebay to try on my eggs.

Are they smaller as grown chickens, too?

I shared the other day about my unsuccessful first try at shipped eggs, or any eggs, under my broody. I never saw any veining or couldn't tell what I was seeing and finally figured they were all duds and when I cracked them open, it was confirmed. I took some of my own eggs from my hens and placed them under the broody. Even though I won't be getting new cool breeds, they will be barnyard mixes, but still cute little chicks. Well, I was soooo excited when I candled them today at day 5 and ALL 8 have veining and I saw some wiggling!!! Such a miracle to me and I've never seen this before. I had been looking and looking at progression charts and when I candled the first egg, it was exactly like the photos I'd been seeing. I was ecstatic!!!!
