August Hatch-A-Long!

Well, my august hatch is done. I only hatched 1 out of 7 eggs in the incubator and my hen only hatched 1 out of seven. The score is even. The hen had two infertile eggs, two that died midway and two that died towards the end. I candled and water candled the eggs before I cracked them open. The hen was right to abandon the eggs. The other eggs were gone. I don't know if it was the two weeks of 105 deg weather or if the hen sat too long after laying eggs in the beginning. Are chicks that die during incubation mean an infertility problem? Well I sneaked in the other chick that I hatched under the hen last night hoping it will not reject it. They hatched on the same day so it won't stand out too much. I will find out after work if the hen rejected the chick and I find a dead body.

Here are my babies, so far so good! Navels seem to be healing great, no irritated pink skin surrounding the area. Bacitracin 3x per day, now they're able to be in wood shavings.

Cute-pa-toot is in the middle. I don't know but for some reason that one stole my heart! Lol

Aww, I can see how they stole your heart, they are adorable!

Congrats on all the adorable chicks everyone! So final count on mine is 2 out of the 7 that made it to lockdown. I did eggtopsies tonight and found 5 fully developed chicks, 4 that failed to pip the inner membrane and 1 that pipped through a major vein somehow.

I hoped for better but with shipped eggs and my first time I'm happy I have my Pip and Nugget.

Pip's toes are doing much better though they still curl under every now and again and she isn't eating except when I set her on my knee and feed her moist food off a spoon. (spoiled much?) I see her drinking on occasion but haven't caught her eating the dry food yet. Nugget doesn't like the dry either but I see her peck at it once in awhile. They're 5 days old now.

... I just cleaned the bator and put in a thermostat I bought today and put in 4 of my MIL eggs (which are the size of duck eggs I swear! Need to find out what she feeds them) 2 of my bantam japs pullet eggs and 1 EE egg that Mallow just started laying a couple days ago. Sooo....guess I'll see you all in the September Hatch along thread!

Thanks! Blue splash Marans x black sex link = blue splash!
this is one of my little 4 week old roos...I have 2 from a broody and 1 from the incubator...I took some pics to post them on craigslist....mixes are rir plus dark brahma....new Hampshire red plus dark brahma! I think they are feathering with some beautiful coloring!
I'll have to pm you pics of my 4 wk olds, It turned out to be quite an interesting mix of colors as well.
well I have plenty of work to do too...and plenty of chickens to love but that's not watching a hatch lol
Yeah, nothing like watching a hatch! I agree.
I love my garden too...In the spring we'll have to share pics with each other...we will be remaking our lay out! that too is exciting!
I have some from this year but as soon as Aug came it was over run with pests. The assassin bugs, wasps, toads, spiders & lady bugs were overwhelmed with them. I hope more predators come next year. It was nice and cool today! I love it, next few days will be awesome.
Aww, I can see how they stole your heart, they are adorable!
Thank you! Love their little grey spots on! One has right above its eye. When it hatched I got a little anxious because it looked like it was the eye lol I was thinking "Oh no! I hatched a mutant! & almost regretted breeding my stellar BSL with my neuro-issue Marans lol. Btw keep me posted on your silkie. My Marans is blind in one eye, he's doing great

Never thought to put up pics of what I had already hatched this month.....can't post the one CCL from the July hatch, she is largely feathered in now, and doesn't look like the little fuzzy I hatched. Also need to post updated pics of the GL Brahmas I got from Jacquie, may just do that to my page though......so many babies!!!!!

The first picture is priceless! The look on his face! Beautiful feathering!

So I had 9 eggs shipped from WA to MO and 7 went to lockdown and 6 hatched. Last one is very weak, gave it sav a chic, will know more if it is still alive by morning. The chick in the sling is out of the sling and standing with hobbles on. Moving around very good too! Fiesty little booger keeps pecking at the tape that makes its hobbles...lol But it is keeping up with the others. Of course it has a 12 hr jump on them since it hatched 1st. The last one hatched is my only 10 toed silkie. And it is the one I am most worried about.

I have a black and yellow chick, a yellow one and a white one. All from leghorn X leghorn. And an egg from my neighbours is black with brown head markings.
