August Hatch-A-Long!

Reading all of this about Marans, I put 24 in the incubator and not one hatched. I thing it was due to a combination of things though. Now I have 15 more in the bater that i got from a different breeder and these are in a much better incubator. I am hoping to see a good hatch rate this time. 19 more days and i will know.

Good luck! Will be cheering you on. Go coco eggs go!

Ok I did! After reading some responses I voted with the majority. I originally would have kept the wonky air cells in the carton but after reading about malpositions, laying them down is a good idea. They're so cute! awesome :) I prefer black market transactions myself

How much space do you have for your chickens. I am curious, because we're looking at some land. I live in the city, so far I have 28 (10 which are full grown. the rest are babies) :hugs I have heard from more than one person that marans can be a sensitive breed. I have one black copper marans pullet and already she lays very thin shelled eggs. Shellz said she had to put one down, it had crushed shells inside of her when she did the autopsy. I'm afraid this will be the case for mine :(
I have heard that you must provide more protein for Marans - maybe this is why?

Quote: research......I have read a lot assist at hatch try to find info on that and there is something about their shells having a coating on them that some scratch off....try not to touch them too much with your bare hands because of your skin oils....anyway I read anything I can find from my search engine....best of luck I'm sure you'll have a great hatch!

I give them all flock which has 20% protein, more than layer feed
gen there is something you give them to help with that....are they getting enough calcium?
They have plenty of oyster shell, they free range, I have little piles of them all over the yard and next to the feeder, crushed egg shells... she's the only one that does it. I have 2 other marans, one is broody and the other is a blue/black marans x

Oh yes, I have noticed their bloom scratches off easily, this is before I get to them. Oh dear. I'll have to watch broody closely, she's sitting on 3 marans eggs including her own small one, which by looking at the air cell does look like something is developing.

hopefully you find an article or something....when I get a chance later I'll try to look for some info too....

Thanks! I'm in the process of moving my coop on the far side of the fence. I want to put them on cinder blocks but I am currently leveling them out. Gotta do it while the weather is in the 70's (crazy but nice weather in the middle of august!)

Luna Raine, Wanted to write to tell you your I.D. icon is soo funny! I tried to copy it to use somewhere. I am sitting here reading as much as I can so that I can handle my chicks right. this is first incubation, and so far so good. I'm glad to see I'm not the only nervous one. However I won't be home on the 21st day! My work schedule wasn't posted for several days after my start day. Well, I'll write more as I join the fun.
AHH, I see it posted right to the site, so GREAT!
I'm soo glad to see everyone here! My 'due date' is August 20th ( notice it is a full moon, wow! that aught to help...if they don't hatch early.)
I have to work out of state, 2 hrs away, on Mon. and come back that evening.!!! My hubby works in town, but will be too tired to help, so they are on their own till Mon. night! <gulp, nail biting> Wish I had a long recording video camera!
Anyone else's due Aug.20th?
Good luck to all of us,
Diann/Nashonii
