August Hatch-A-Long

I did finally candle my eggs the other night. I just never got around to posting the results. I'm still unsure of a few of my blue and green eggs. I had 11 definite duds that I pulled out. I'm incubating eggs from fairly new layers, so that doesn't really surprise me. It looks like I have a 1-2 girls that haven't gotten friendly with the boys yet. I keep eyeing my extra eggs on the counter and the extra space in my incubator... but staggering my hatches that much would be bad.. so I'd have to set up one of my other incubators to use as a hatcher.. and if I'm going to have to set up a second incubator, it would just make more sense to fill it with all 4 dozen eggs that are sitting on my counter, right??

Absolutely!!!! All bators should be used to their fullest potential...AND it just sounds to me like you are using your resources wisely

I vote..put them all in the bator

Could I have some help?

I put 3 tbs of raw unfiltered acv in my plastic 3 gallon water jug but I didn't see any of them drink it, they drank from the galvanized can

Maybe chemicals in the plastic are combining in some way with the ACV giving the water a taste they aren't familiar with?

Thank you! Any tips for candling? I am scared to mess something up!

As long as you don't drop any eggs or shake them, you probably won't mess them up. Other than that, I just suggest using a really bright flash light in a dark room. Since they're pretty far along already, you won't be able to see a whole lot. A big dark area in the egg is what you want to see. If the whole inside of the egg glows, that means that they didn't develop. If you've never candled before, practice on one of your eating eggs first to get a feel for it.

Since your broody is hatching them, candling isn't really necessary. In theory, she'll kick any bad eggs out of the nest. It's completely up to you. :)
We'll in that case I have 19 eggs set to hatch next Friday!!!

Welcome Bryce! I have eggs that should be hatching the day before yours :) What kind of eggs are are you hatching?
Its when a bunch of people incubating at the same time all get together and "egg" each other on

LOL.

ooh...seramas are on my wish list...don't have any eggs. All of mine are common breeds. But if meyer had any seremas i'd have grabbed those eggs up n a heartbeat. I can't wait to hear how your hatch goes!

Seramas are perfect for me because the big roosters are too loud for me : ) We had an Americauna roo once and his crow was piercing to my brain. I used to wake up dreaming about screech owls when it was just him crowing. He found a new home and I never wanted a rooster again until I discovered the joys of hatching!! We got our Serama rooster Buddy on craigslist and he is a total sweetheart! He is more cuddly than most of my animals. He will snuggle and fall asleep in my arms and likes to sit on your shoulder.

When I took eggs out from under my broody, I left her three that looked good, and put 5 in the bator, I was sure 2 of those were quitters and one was laid yesterday, the other 2 are developing! They are several days or a week along I think. Weird because I didn't see that when I candled them the other night. I just want to get a few chicks soon for my broody so she can take a break. She is letting me feed her a bit on the nest so I think she's warming up to me. She does seem to have trouble keeping the eggs under her sometimes. I found one back under her tail feathers last night and it was not so warm. My other broody did a perfect job but this Frizzle is just determined, if not so skilled.

I candled my mixed chicken eggs and found 3 clears... all but one of the dark Maran eggs. It is probably good because those were the ones I was tempted to keep if they hatch. I am down to 9 eggs but they all look great!

My thermostat came yesterday and I got my new hatcher with fan all hooked up. It is in a really cheap cooler though so I may be tempted to fix that. I found a thick styrofoam cooler on the street a while ago... couldn't help but snatch it up so it might make a better shell. It is super long though so maybe I could put the light at one end and have the fan blow out to the hatching area. I have some days before the Serama eggs get here... I'm nervous and excited... thinking I went a little crazy ordering so many!

Is it possible the temp in the room got warmer? The only time my incubator really fluctuates is if the room its in does too, in which case I adjust the temp in my house and leave the bator alone. Mine usually goes down when I remove eggs, since I have to open the bator (obviously

).

Just a thought, glad you're back on track!

It shouldn't.. But as the chicks grow in the eggs, they'll start generating some heat too. It's not uncommon for that to raise the temp slightly. An increase in room temperature will definitely do it too.
Thank you both so much! I havn't touch the ac in the room but I kinda was thinking it felt a little warmer. Its been very hot out the last few days, maybe I will play with it a bit. I didn't think about the room being warmer...duh!! lol Right now its at 100 so I will see how the next 24hr goes. I will candle the second group tomorrow and Monday will be Lockdown!!!

I bought them on eBay, I had 16 americuana and the other lot said add color to your flock and it came with 2 white ones which I imagine our white leghorns and add seven brown ones that i don't know
