August Hatch-A-Long

We have a few red star's and 1 speckled sussex eggs under our broody mallard hen at the moment, we only have about 3 eggs in there to run as a test to see if this even works. If all goes well they will be hatched on the 24th! This will be our first time hatching out eggs.

How sweet is she!!! As long as she doesn't try taking them swimming...lol just teasing! Good luck!

Yes I have my plugs open and will continue. I'm going to have to fight with my humidity a little since like a dummy I had just added water yesterday

Its day 10 on the second group but was only day 12 on the first, but I couldn't help it...lol I do feel a little bit better on the second group, I think there might be 3 or 4 going good. Much better than none. The first group has 9 with one questionable on what its doing. I'm going to take a little more time on thursday, being day 14, and I will actually take out eggs that are bad. Still none smell bad or weeping so I should be good till then. I kinda feel like thursday will be my day to really see whats going on and Monday, which will be lock down, I will be taking out turner. I might have a couple eggs I will have to leave in egg carton for hatching but will see. I have one egg I'm a little concerned about. I noticed today that its air sac is completely on the side if not almost at other end. Not sure how that is but its not where all the others are and I believe it is a live chick.

I'm just to new at this with no knowledge of chickens so its hard for me to worry about to much of it. I will learn though...lol Give me most any other animal and I'm great but never hatched chicks! I also was wondering how everyone does or feels about merricks vaccine on day 1 for the chicks. I would like to do the rt thing but I never have given a chicken an injection before! lol I worked in vets office and on people but never a chicken

Well...of course if you are ALREADY in the bator, might as well check all the eggs...right???

I think as long as your wonky air cell egg pips in the air cell, it should be fine. I know chicks that pip in the wrong side of the egg(narrow end) can have a hard time zipping and getting out but hopefully side won't be an issue?

Sorry I have no experience with vaccine

Awww...good luck! I have always wondered how the mothering part works when a hen hatches ducks or vice versa...one swims...one doesn't? You will have to let us know what that looks like!
welcome!!!

I've heard chicken raised Ducks is better, they just freak out when the Ducks decide to go swimming. Ducks will try to take the chickens swimming, but luckily we dont have any open water near, just the pool. Which we wil keep shallow enough so if she makes them swim they dont drown. I will keep everyone updated! It's only day 2, I plan on doing candling on day 7 or 8 to make sure they are developing.

WOOOHOO!!! So my crazy hatch with my broody Peep...who's eggs were not supposed to hatch until next week according to person I got eggs from...got up super fast to take a poop break and I peeked at the eggs in her nest. Egg #2 is zipping out now!!!!!!
