August Hatch-A-Long

First of all, very sorry about the lose of your other eggs.

Thank you very much for following up.  I had not heard of eggs turning dark before.

:hit

You're very welcome. I'm all for learning from others experiences and sharing mine. I had a couple of Dominique chicks that had died in the shell from my hatch last week but they did not turn dark. I wonder if it has something to do with the color and weird translucence of the ancona duck shells that allowed it to show up like that. I was very much convinced that I was not cracking into a live egg or I wouldn't have done it. So sad. But that cute little duck that is my avatar is the early bird that hatched Sunday.

I love watching that.  I have two mommas and they must have a different chirp, because there is no confusion with the chicks!

Aug: Update.  Just candled eggs I felt were certainly dead, after rough shipping and a bad start in the incubator.  We have action!!!

Very happy for you! It's always exciting to see movement. :yesss:

After candling and water candling with absolutely no movement and the eggs turning black, I made the decision to do egg autopsies. Taking care that if there was the slightest sign of life to take measures to do anything to save them. I have been reading a lot on saving preemies. They were all definitely quitters. One had internally pipped, I thought I had seen the pip on Sunday when I candled at lockdown. Two looked full term but a couple of days dead and two had probably quit 3-5 days ago. It saddens me that my poor lonely duckling will only have the chickens to live with. I have to decide when to get more Ancona duck eggs. Now or in the spring.

That is exactly what happened to mine and I had 9 eggs

If you get any info on why/how it happened can you share with me? I hatch ducks in my classroom every year and this is the first year that has happened to me...I was so sad

Hi everyone!
Tonight I am setting my first batch of eggs ever! I never thought this would be something I'd be interested in, but about a week ago I went to check on the girls and found a baby! Watching the momma and baby has been the cutest thing I've ever seen and I'm am now hoping to hatch some more and have her raise more babies! Ill keep my favorites and find homes for the others.

I bought the little giant still air incubator with the egg turner. I've been keeping the temp at 99.5-100 and so far my humidity has stayed around 53 54. Is this how it should be? I've heard a couple different things but I'm open to any opinions! I'm labeling my eggs now and about to put them in.

I have 14 eggs and I've been collecting for the past 4 days. To be honest I don't need 14 more chicks so I will be excited if 2 or 3 hatch! I'm not expecting much since this is my first time, but I was wondering what is the normal hatch rate give or take?

The funnest part is I have 4 different breeds of chickens (cochin, barred rock, buff orpington, and silkies!) I have 7 total so I have no idea what kind of mixes I will end up with, but I'm excited to see how they turn out. I'm super excited about the 4 Silkie eggs I have since my rooster is a frizzled Silkie "sizzle?"

(My original random baby chick that started all this is a frizzled barred rock with furry feet! I can't wait to see what she looks like as an adult!!)

Please don't judge me for having a mutt mix I love them all and I'm not trying to make money off of them :).

Also any tips I will use! Thanks everyone! Glad to be here!
