August Hatch-A-Long

Well it looks like I ended up with 2 silkies and 1 black silkie that did not survive long. Rest of the eggs appear not to be alive. Kinda bummed but at least 2 fluffies made it. :(.

Well I have had the incubator turned on monitoring it for the past 3 days and didn't think about when I put my egg turner in that it would take a while for me to have it perfect again. So I have gone ahead and placed them in there. I've waited about an hour since I put the turner in and the temp is kinda staying around 99.5 but the humidity has been up and down. Will this be ok if I go ahead and put them in? It's getting late and ill be working all day tomorrow.

At least it wasn't just one who made it. Bummer the others didn't :( but these are precious! I Love silkies. I hope at least one of mine make it.

Consistent temp is the most important thing...temp and humidity will flex a bit when you first put the eggs in...just watch that it stabilizes. If it was stable before you put the eggs in, you should be fine...let the wait begin!

Hello guys,

The hatching for this year is done for me, I think. The quails of Sunday and Monday are doing fine, though three of them did not make it. They just were not able to drink or eat and their yokes weren't very well absorbed. These eggs given to me were very different in size and I think the smallest were just too small and laid by very young quails.
Here in the French country my farming neighbours say: that's life, there are things that are worse.

But I'm afraid this is the first and the last time I do quails, they are just to small for me. I had 45 eggs, 7 appeared infertile at day 14.

I put 23 chicks in the brooder and examined the rest of the eggs. Three of them were stuck in their shells for 3 days, but still alive and now doing fine after I took off the shell very carefully. I found another 5 with air cell but clear, so infertile, which I didn't see at first. The rest just did not pip at all.

But 23 chicks are well, eating en drinking and running very very fast. So I'm happy with the result of this year, hatched chicken chicks in July for the first time in an incubator and now the quails.
I started with three chickens almost 2 years ago, now I have 29 chickens (rooster, chicks and chickens) and 23 quails. Some change!

Happy hatching to you all!

This might be an odd question, but when can anyone join in? I am asking because I just got some Brown Leghorn hens and a rooster and was hoping to start incubating eggs ASAP. That being said I am under the impression that I should give them 3 days of laying before assuming they are fertile and was also told to check on rooster and see if he is

but am not sure how to do that as they are enclosed and will be for the next week according to the guy we bought them from so should I be checking on them multiple times through the day?

There enclosure is not see through at all

So getting to back to the first question when is the latest to join? Do the chicks have to be due in August?
