August Hatch-A-Long

Oh my! It's all happening! So many cute pics - keep them coming!!

In the dead of the night I could hear lots of tapping, very light - sounded like when the wood fire is just getting some heat up and the metal is expanding - anyway I woke up this morning to more cracks in the number 1 egg (I'll call her Faith for now because she's given me some!) so I'm very hopeful I can let them be.

Oh so sweet.. pecking mama's eye!   Really cute little chipmunker!

The chick is absolutely adorable. My speckled sussex is a first time broody/mama, and she is being so sweet. This chick is a mix between an EE and this speckled sussex hen. The next chick is EE dad and EE mom. Can't wait to see how they turn out!

Oh my goodness, so jealous of you! My broody is my only full speckled sussex. I love her so much. I would love to have more and a roo to go with! Same goes for golden laced wyandottes and silver laced wyandottes!

I wish you lived closer because I can't keep them all : ) They are from a Speckled Sussex and Copper Maran roo over Speckled Sussex, Copper Maran, Welsummer and Americana hens.

I had 18 eggs shipped to me, 4 of them were busted and their contents were all over many of the good eggs. I soaked the eggs in a warm bleach water solution for a few minutes then wiped and dried them off. Of the 14 that went into the bator I had 3 non developers, 1 quitter and 10 still going strong, due to hatch on the 21st. So I don't think the bleach water hurt them, especially since the eggs were shipped around a thousand miles.

My broody was off her nest and I was counting the eggs, I hated to do it but the nest smelled soooo bad that I brought in another 5 eggs and washed them off and put them in the incubator. 3 are moving inside, one looks like it hasn't started incubating yet and the last one looks bad inside. That last one was tucked inside the shell of another egg that had gotten broken. I tried washing them with plain water, very warm but not hot, but the stuff wouldn't come off. I put them in a very warm bowl of soapy water and let them soak while I cleaned the others and then took a scrubby pad (plastic) to get off the stuff I couldn't peel or scratch off with my nails. Then I put them in the incubator to rest for a while. Later I checked them and that is when I found 3 of them moving around in there.

I am wondering if I should go ahead and bring the others in, put the fake eggs under her and slip the babies under her when they hatch. What does everyone think? I am also thinking about changing the nest lining but I'm afraid she won't go back to the eggs if I do.
