August Hatch-A-Long

Well the baby detached on itself. Poor thing has so many problems dont know if it is genetics. E-bay eggs so I can't say. His right eye never fully formed and has a cross beak. S/he will not be used for breeding. s/he is the only one that hatched. only 2 made it to lockdown. I still have 1 more egg waiting to hatch. Looks to be a splash silkie will have to get some pictues of s/he dried.

Other chick did not make it. I piped it myself, just a small hole to see i it was alive. It was not. So opened it up to see if it had the same effects as the one who hatched this morning. It also has a cross over beak, couldn't see the eyes though. So my guess is the cross over beak is a genetic issue. Cant be incubation or Lucky would also have cross over. They were incubated with Lucky except past 10 days. But my suspicious were right...It piped through a vein and bled out.

Sorry about the chicks! I hope the first one makes it, and doesn't have a too bad of a problem with its beak! Lucky would really love a friend!

I think the first one will make it. S/he is being very active. I am going to introduce Him/her to Lucky later on today. s/he is walking on its own and more active now that it slept. I have more Silkies coming in about 2 weeks. They are from a different person from E-bay so I am hoping no genetic issues so I can use them for breeding. I want to eventually start breeding paint silkies but only time will tell.

Awww...so glad your baby made it!!!! I have had a crazy day and have been dying to see what's happening! Fluffy and adorable

Nothing you can do if it hits a vein when it pips.

And yes, it does sound like a genetics issue since both eggs came from the same person, but at least Lucky will have a friend for company and hopefully this little one will be ok. How does the beak ect look now and is baby eating and drinking ok?

Fingers crossed your next batch of siklies hatch healthy!!!!!

He hasn't ate or drank on his own yet I am still showing him where everything is. Think it may be harder with only one eye. But he is active walking around. Yesterday was spent mostly sleeping. Plus he still has the yolk in him so he may not feel the need to eat and drink yet. I was told that he looks like a Lavender Silkie, I was thinking Blue so thats neat. The lavenders are pretty.

Awwww.....adorable! I have read with chicks that have vision problems and even older chickens that they need help finding food and water. But you are probably right, chicky isn't feeling the need to eat quite yet because of the yolk. Blue or lavender...going to be a beautiful bird!
