Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

So I have gotten my incubator and I have a few question.

Firstly it is a JN106 and the instructions say it is suggested to place the incubator in the foam and packing box to keep warm and save electricity and it is good for even temperature.
Those of you that have used an incubator before, do you do this or will it be fine outside of the box?

One thing that is concerning me is that the water container to apparently control the humidity sticks out a little so air can get into the bottom of the incubator.

I am too scared to push it too far in as I did that when it had no water in it and it went all the way in and it was hard getting back out

It doesn't come with anything to measure humidity, just says to check water level in container every 2-3 days.
Is this safe or should I get something to measure humidity level? Not that I know what I'm looking for LOL

BTW, I will posting this in the proper area also

HI I have never used that type but I have heard you should keep them in the foam box. I would get a hydrometer and thermometer from say bunnings and check the temps and humidity by them.

If I do that then wouldn't I be disturbing the eggs when I have to take the incubator out to refill the water container?

Not sure on that particular model, but usually you can get a thin piece of tubing that can fit through somewhere to fill the water container. I used a syringe into the tubing. It is really not a big problem, "disturbing the eggs", the problem may be how long it takes for the incubator to stabilise the humidity and temperature again.

As far as the foam goes, it depends where you are in Australia. I am in Qld, and only had it sitting in the foam bottom, and only in winter. Otherwise it was too difficult to maintain the temp as it would get too hot and take forever to come down. It is better for the eggs to get a bit cold for a little while than to get too hot.

You very definitely need to obtain a thermometer and hygrometer, ebay or bunnings, as the thermometer on that brand are notoriously unrelieable, and you need to know your humidity.

Ok thanks. It has a temp gauge just no hygrometer.

Yes, I understand that. But you need a separate thermometer, as the thermometer that comes with that particular brand is very unreliable, and it is the quickest way to have terrible (or zero) hatches, to have a thermometer out by a couple of degrees. You also do need to know what the humidity is, particularly when starting out. That is just my opinion. :)

That's what I was trying to say. Thanks rexy for explaining it better.
