Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Un chicken related by exciting for me. My lesbian budgie has layed an egg lol. I have had a few budgies for a few years now. Pearly i have had the longest she has just turned 3. People would come look at the budgie avairy and ask how many babies i get a year. I'd say none. Pearly and speedy and Heidi the 3 girls (speedy and heidi are only young) Have never shown any interest in laying so I would joking tell people i think she is gay cause she never seemed interested in the handsome males i got for her. She would go in the nest boxes all the time but never lay anything. On Monday arvo as i was collecting quail eggs i checked her box and she has layed one very small but cute white egg. Whether she sits now is another thing but she layed an egg. Go Pearly

Well done Satay, GO PEARLY.

i love my muscovies cause to me they are the friendliest of the duck breed. My scovies lay an egg a day on average right up to the start of winter then nothing til spring. I sell my non fertile muscovey eggs for $5 a doz to the asian community for pickiling. No I don't have marans Luke.( i have a bcm rooster but no hens) I keep being tempted to get some but so far have resisted the tempation lol. For breeding i have araucana's, rir. Austalorps, Cochins, brahmas and frizzle bantam and the wellies when they are old enough.
Oh I thought Muscovies where seasonal layers. I've heard that the Asian restaurants will take as many duck eggs as you can give, I hope to sell them a few when I get MORE DUCKS.
I think I'm going to have to tip you over the edge and say you should GET SOME MARANS, think about the baring and the chocolate colourd eggs

and then I will buy fertile eggs of you every year. Please please please or at least tell me where I could get some from.

Hi all, saying hi from the sunny south coast NSW.
So anybody else in the heatwave zone ? Expecting a top of 43deg Tues which my poor 5mth old chooks are not used to so a little concerned.
I set up a quick misting system with some automatic watering system pipe this afternoon so am hoping that works to cool things down in the run. Got frozen water in coke bottles ready to go on a water dish.
Fingers crossed that's enough and I don't end up with four chooks in my lounge with the air con :)
Hope you got through it ok. We're in NW suburbs of Sydney and it got to 44C in our backyard. I have one of those misters set up in the run but I wasn't certain it would be enough for my 4 x 30-week-olds..... so I brought them into a spare, airconditioned bathroom. Took them back out at 7am this morning - and was rewarded with my first ever 4-egg day.

Now that's a thank you! (Just as well as I then spent the morning cleaning the bathroom).

I'm a newbie so I worried - maybe too much - then I figured, well unlike lots of people I can bring them in so.... why not?!?

I've lurked in this thread for a bit - it's nice to follow. I have one each of RIR, Silver Campine, Australorp and Barnevelder. And a cat called Spike - hence the user name.

The heatwave is far from over, so stay cool everyone, hope all your chickens are ok

We had an astalorp years ago, best chicken ever :)

We survived Topped out at 42 in the end. I had the misters going but went and checked around lunch and they were all panting and one was all flattened and her whole body seemed to move with each breath so I dragged the sprinklers even closer (ran across the top of a swing set) and that fixed it They even got up for a bit of a wander after that.

My hubby would have killed me if I'd put them in the bathroom but I was eyeing off his garage lol

I thought of the garage but if anything it seems hotter than outdoors. My husband knows how much I love the chickens - so the spare bathroom was his idea. On the condition I cleaned up afterwards, of course!

Our garage was cooler than outside but not as cool as the misters if they sat near them. Trouble was they didn't like being too close :)

At least the end of the week isn't going to hit 40 again but anything over about 34 they're panting hard. I don't even want to think what my water bill is going to be by the end of summer!

HI, very interested in your post, I am on Tamborine Mt in southeast QLD and it is hot up here today, 34, not as hot as you have it, but enough to worry about the chickens while I was at work. We are expecting many more days of hot weather. This is their first summer, so feel like I need to take care with them. One is out there now yelling. I like your suggestions, and how scary to find your layed out chicken. Mine have been walking around with their mouths open and panting. I have plenty of water on hand for them but much of it is still there at the end of the day. Might have to look into the misters. Thanks!

Hi Katrina, thanks for your post. I got home today (southeast QLD) to check on everyone. They were yelling when I got home, but everyone seems fine. We got up to 34, not as hot as you had it, but its supposed to get worse. I hadn't thought of bringing them inside, their coop feels cool but thanks for your ideas. Maura

I'd noticed that too recently, and they would go up to the water but not do more than put their beak in. Then I read they won't drink warm water. Wondering if yours were calling because they thought the water was too warm to drink?

We got to 43.1c here today. Oh tamborine mountains and those lovely water holes. I miss those from when I was a city chick.
