Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

appps, yeah I'm not sure whats happened there because the rock is level with the photo but the horizon is curved of at the end. Might be the waves?!?!

Yeah I noticed that. I was actually wondering if it was a really wide angle lens. That's one on my wish list, would love to have a play with a fisheye lens :)

Ok, no more un-chicken related photos

The mum in me is screaming don't stand so close to the edge!! Lol But you need the person to really understand how big they are. Wow!

These are really good! Second one is my favourite. I just spent $150 on a variable nd filter only to discover my lens has a little bend in it (don't remember dropping it) so it won't screw onto the lens. So very jealous you get to play with one :) as mine just makes me want to scream in frustration.

Thank you Fancy and Satay .... for your answers. We do have rats, but definitely no cats around. Rats and mice are almost plague here in Victoria at present. They are rare daytime visitors, but mostly come out and scurry along the fenceline to their 'holes' ( from I think the wood pile or behind the coops ) .... at dusk.

So it could have been Mindy, or more likely a rat ? I do think Mindy probably ate some of it though. Ugh ! The chooks don't seem to mind rats and mice at all ?? Live quite happily with them.

Our coops are now totally rat and mouse proofed - but they still arrive to see if they can get ( or chew their way through wood ) in. Found 5 little field mice behind the coop the other night ( late ) - all blinded by the torch light, looking up at me.

Found a chicken egg in our FRONT garden two days after ( early evening ) - our girls don't even know we HAVE a front garden, and it was a creamy white small bantam sized egg. Might have been carried by a rat and dropped, as it was only partly cracked. I am thinking there is one very very big rat out there somewhere - ..... would love to catch the darned thing, so will be setting traps near the largest tunnel under the fence this coming weekend. And of course Miss Mindy won't be permitted out until we have de-activated it - hopefully with a large rat in it.

Again, thanks for your responses.

Cheers ........ AB

Does anyone know a good way to get rid of those varmits? We have mice and rat trouble also. Feed is in garage in a metal bin, we put rat & mice poison in the garage. Back at the coop, when I pin up the girls at night, I see the mice and rats scurry about to their tunnels. I have filled their tunnels with wood, gravel, they just dig more. We put a weasel trap back there & one of our hens got her neck in it

. Good news is that DH was home that day, went back to the coop to make sure they had water, and he got her out. She made it and is fine now. We put "have a heart" traps out and caught 2 feral cats and 2 chickens

. We have 70+ chickens and about 10 of them get out before I open the coop door to let them free range.

They are very pretty Chookpatch.  : )  I was thinking Marans or Welsummers, but I didn't know they had a reddish tint.  Maybe it's just my eyes.
My chickens are winning the who is training who side of things.  Since I've become aware that my neighbours are not enjoying Steve's loud complaining (why am I not eating grass right now!) I seem to be getting up earlier & earlier.  5:50am this morning!  I'm thinking blackout curtains.  Is anyone else having a problem with early & vocal risers?  And what can I do about it.  I've tried the spraying them, but they just move into the coop & vocalise angrily from there.  :rant Once I'm back in bed of course.

Oh my goodness I am so glad I am not the only one feeling this!! Nothing stops them! I literally go out there at 5:45am yelling SHUT UP!!! I love them to bits but come on! We bought an auto door that let's them into the run very early but apparently that's not good enough>:/

Teila and Luke they are beautiful photos :) Marans do have a reddish tone, it's not your eyes :) Here is an old pic I've posted before but you can see how red they are. And a few pics of one of my favourites Maize:)

Mine have a tunnel from the converted playhouse to the run that is never closed. I made a rod for my back when I started letting them free range. They love it & there is no going back now! I covered the windows last night & either I was too tired to hear them or they slept in a little later. I let them out of the run in the mornings to free range & back in at lunch time. They kick up a fuss at 3pm when I used to let them out, but I'm ignoring that. I shall block out their windows again tonight & see if it's working.
