Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Sam, I was just out in a T-shirt, and it didn't feel too cold at 10C. I didn't stay out there for too long though. -20 is when it starts to get cold. My favorite weather is around -5 though, it's cold enough for the snow to stay solid even in the sun, but you can still do whatever you want outside. I hate winters when it bounces around 0, that's just icky.

Note to ones self never ever visit felix :plbb

Our favourite chicken Carl is sick :(

I thought she was Sunday because she was just standing under my chair for the longest time without moving and her tail was looking droopy and I heard her sneeze once so I gave her some scrambled eggs with some vitamin powder as a little pick me up. She seemed okay yesterday though I did hear a few more sneezes from her but this morning I've let them out and she has just stayed sitting on the roost.

Chickens do just get colds like the rest of us don't they?

Not normally no. They can get respitory infections that require antibiotics. You should be able to pick some up at your produce store if she seems to be getting any worse. Have you changed nesting materials or anything? Sometimes they can get the sneezes from new hay etc if you put it in your run.

Sam, Your garden is beautiful & so are your ara's. Do you do anything special to keep your roses spot free? Pretty nestboxes - wish that kind of thing happened more often.

Appps, sorry, but I really don't know anything about chicken colds. Hope Carl recovers soon!

Aussie, I sometimes feed back crushed egg shell. I use boiled egg shells that have come off cleanly & crush finely with a mortar & pestle. If there's no resemblence to an egg I don't think it encourages egg eating. You could just do a few while you track down calcium carbonate. I haven't seen it anywhere either, although I haven't checked gardening stores.

It appears that Snowy has to reintroduce herself after sleeping in the nest box. Some chasing, a quick scuffle & Steve seemed satisfied that she had made her point. Also, the coop door was open & there was grass to be eaten. Snowy's comb is looking a bit shrivelled this morning. I'm not sure how to get her to look after herself better. The others are all ok.

Egg shells are 97% calcium carbonate. You either need to educate your feed store staff or sack them and move on. Shell grit is to aid in digestion because hens have no teeth, calcium carbonate is the most readily absorbed form of calcium supplement, the problem is people think they are one and the same.

I had this same argument with a certain husband last night who has been working in the produce section of the mitre 10 store. He is convinced they are the same as all shells have calcium.... in the end he kept saying well how do you know they are different ? and i think your wrong.. I yelled well fancy said so and she knows everything :lau He walked away.. Men...:smack

No chickens don't get colds . They suffer with upper respiratory issues though. There are the obvious contagious diseases that will present with these symptoms but there can be other contributing factors, worms, egg binding , coccocidiosis , DE, ammonia rising from their unrates when they are the perch at night. Any of these can cause upper respiratory symptoms. I generally start by treating for worms but I wouldn't rule out cocci if I were you. What's her poop look like?

You would have liked July this summer here though, we had a month of 30+ weather, I almost melted.

I could have come visit you then. I had a friend from finland when i was a teenager. She taught me how to play a card game called Risksayska.. I am sure the spelling is way off but they would only let me play if i said everything in finnish... Not that i remember a word of it now.
