Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Do you guys know if our Australian kites are a threat to a full grown chicken? Noticed one circling in the air a couple of houses over yesterday and wondering if I should keep the chickens on supervised lawn time and if under the bushes where they wander the rest of the time is ok.
It used to come watch the favs from our gumtree when they were about 12 weeks old so we put bird netting up (temporary run long gone) but haven't seen it since then till yesterday. Guess it's it's baby feeding time again.

I've never been too worried but was talking to someone last night who had lost chickens to a hawk locally. Has made me a little nervous.

I have only had an issue many years ago with a small hawk that picked up a full size bantam. Lucky I scared it and it dropped her. Then the peewees chased it out of the yard.

Happy new year guys ! Our little goss hawk is no bigger than a pigeon and so far all he has killed are 6-8 week old chicks. However when he is lurking all of the big birds run and hide while king George and little George stand side by side sounding the alarm. So I feel that if the birds sense danger , chances are that danger is present.

well im done for the day...and frozen it was like 5 outside...got one big wall up with the first set of wire....I hope it goes up faster then what it did today...happy new year everyone

Good morning Folks and Happy New Year!

I think I saw Hawk hanging around once but it was very high and my bird identifying skills could definitely have been off that day! Around here, I am more concerned about the crows which are as big as my bantams and very daring when it comes to stealing food, eggs and no doubt, if given the chance, chicks!

Interestingly, while writing a post on another thread, I visited Council's web site to quote information on cat requirements, registration etc. As, in the past, our cats were required to be registered and you were only allowed to have two. "The Queensland government has changed the laws regarding mandatory cat registration. Due to these changes, if you live in the Brisbane City Council area, you no longer need to register your cat" Wow, I did not know that and for a change, a reversed revenue

Anyways, they now simply advise the following and apparently we can now have three without a permit ..........

As a cat owner, you have to make sure your cat doesn't become a neighbourhood nuisance.
You should:
* Minimise your cat's impact on neighbours and wildlife
* Identify your cat with a collar and microchip
* Desex your cat before it is six months old
* Vaccinate your cat annually
* Provide your cat with enough food, water and exercise

I think it was too hard to keep track of cats being registered. Though in the brief time you had to have it done we got bitten. We had a stray kitten invite itself into our house so we kept her but didn't get around to registering her, a year later we moved house and ofcourse as cats do she went wandering and got picked up by the pound, because she wasn't registered it was a huge amount to get her out and we couldn't afford it :(
I'm told she got adopted so I hope they aren't lying to me, I still feel sick for having to leave her there.

The ones we have here we call chicken hawks though I don't think I've ever heard of them taking a full sized bird, chicks definitely and maybe a bantam so to be safe I have my run covered with bird net

There were only a few councils that dropped the cat rego. Ours did too. Funny we can only have 2 cats no matter how many acres you have..

Oh that's sad. I never registered my cat when you were supposed to. He is so anti social that I doubt anyone would get near him to check. Then they dropped the rego. Both the boys are registered though.
