The Lifespan of a Chicken

One of the most common questions I'm asked is "How long can a chicken live?"

Believe it or not, chickens have quite an impressive lifespan! The maximum age of a chicken is around 25 years. It's very rare for a chicken to live that long, however, because they are so vulnerable to predators and disease.

Due to their vulnerability, the average age of a backyard chicken is only about 3 or 4 years, although I feel that with special protection and care it would not be unreasonable to expect 7 or 8 years.

My oldest hen is a New Hampshire red/blue bantam cochin mix named Sarah. She is 11 years old and still laying.

A question for anyone that breeds runners (ducky if your about) I have 7 runners, 3 boys and 4 girls. they have all just been moulting but have grown all their feathers back. Prob with the boys is they no longer have a curl on their tails.. These are the only runners i have and they are housed seperately to the other ducks. I have hatched babies from that pen this year so i know they are definately boys. I am not sure how old the boys are as 2 came with the other girls i bought and the white male came from Brissy. Are my drakes totally weird or has anyone else had their drakes do this too.
