Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

A hen can hatch out of a blue egg and still not lay a blue egg itself.  The blue egg gene is dominant. If the original blue egg layer has only one copy of the gene it will lay blue eggs, however her daughter may have received No copy of that gene and hence will lay a brown or white egg.

oh gees now you tell me! Mine better lay blue cos thats the only reason I bought them.

HI Andrew :frow
I know my pekin girls will happily except babies from anywhere really. I only do it at night and then I will watch for a bit to make sure it goes well. Not all hens are as accepting as these two though.
Marans come in either wheaten or French wheaten. The wheaten have no feathers on the legs and are what the British breed for and the French are the ones with the feathered shanks. Both are acceptable but most seem to prefer the fw version.

These forum pages are a MESS, and defy ANY logic.

This fternoon I responded, read the preview, and posted........gone!
Yesterday posted here Rooster Straegy......appears in WHERE AM I , WHERE ARE YOU!!!

Front page, first post, LAST page latest post......some genius at work there

This reminds me of the aisles of most stupidmakets, layed out by retards on steroids.

Seems if one has a post selected and hits reply, a reasonable person would be expecting that to appear as a reply, right?......noooooo!

What am I doing wrong, need some guidance here before next post, and I am in hopes this remains in our threa and is not wafted off to the Live Otter baiting thread in another forum altogether

GREAT ITS HERE

Ok so another incubator question: I want to sterilise it before I set the eggs....it Milton (the stuff you use for baby bottles) a good choice? Any other suggestions? AND do I make up the solution, put it in the water chambers and left it "fan" through for a couple hours? Or just wash and go...

Miltons will do fine, I just use domestos or bleach. I place the bottom half in the bath and pour bleach in then dilute with water, let it sit overnight. When it's time to take the egg turning tray out I place each egg in a muffin paper and line the tray with paper towel, this minimizes spills and goopy muck.
I then use glen 20 to spray the lid section. A wipe down with methylated spirits will also suffice.
There is one product that can replace all of these and is also good for sanitizing coops after disease.
Virkon , it is also effective against marecks and is readily available in Australia.

To start a new thread you need to be in the section you wanted it posted in say where are you where am I or if you were going to sell something under the buy sell section etc. You can find the sub headings in the main part of the forum.

Well thats more like it, IT must be ME.......No idea what I did different, BUT I did,

So,

Thanks for the night tip, I can see how it may be exploited to advantage.

Also, if some Mothers accept, and others resist/decline for their own reasons, then a person would be identifying who is a ' Good Mum' and planning around them with purchases, or additions, so that is a good tip too, thanks.

Monday night I collected eggs and ended up covered in mites! Two weeks ago moved all the hens out, dusted and sprayed the Roosts and run. Gave it a day or two, resprayed and brought the hens back. I normally the hens get dusted and wormed once a month. For the last four years, have not seen mites. Seems this humid warm weather is encouraging the numbers to grow significantly.

Anything additional I can do? my current process is:-

Nesting and bedding is either pea straw or sugar cane mulch. Spray/dust when first laid. Spay and dust the perches and empty the grain silo (small e.g. 3m dia.) and spray dust monthly.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

Ok Starting a new thread is working for me

But this from what I can see, is just one LONG thread that continues, and continues, hence the latest post just going to the end.
