Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Our girl had a great comp over the weekend , bringing home the ribbons, the rug and a wad of cash.
To our despair when we got home , one of the youngsters had broken his leg in a freak paddock accident. The highs and lows of equestrian love. We are devastated. :(

Gratz to your daughter but so sorry for the loss :hugs

I have a dilemma this is my automatic water trough in the chook pen. I have 2 geese that get locked up with the chooks at night. They keep swimming in the trough and knocking out the plug then no one has any (For the night , their all put in the day with a pond and water troughs) I've put chicken wire over and wired it down so there is only enough room for little heads to reach in for a drink But it's not working. Does anyone else have geese in with the chooks? What do you use for drinking water? Thanks in advance :)

I used to I used big metal containers that clipped onto the side of the pen they could get there heads in there but not swim.

Hi, I have had the same battle. The best thing here is Pestene powder. But I cannot use it with new chicks. I lost one through that.
Now I clean out, spray with fly spray, new nest materials, and chopped up garlic in the straw. I also use the stems and leaf of the garlic. It does work and it doesn't matter if they eat it. It doesn't change the taste of the eggs. Garlic is also good for other parasites in animals like fleas on dogs.

I've not had the mite issue yet, or parasite issues. I have some wormwood plants (artemesia absinthium) that I use for decoration in the front garden, and when I trim their exuberant foliage, it goes into the chook house along with DE and zeolite granules. Their water includes garlic and ACV. I imagine that when I get an infestation, I'll have to use medication.

My waterers are held off the ground to avoid shavings being kicked in and are currently the large plastic ones from feed stores - nothing could fit in them to swim in them. The garlic and apple cider vinegar stop algae growth and keep them from being slimy.

However, I am intending to switch to a PVC waterer made out of tubing and plumbing fixings in order to provide more water security on hot days - right now, if they kicked both of their large waterers over somehow, they would be in trouble.

Hi guys! I'm still alive! Depression and anxiety have been getting the better of me and study has been taking up all of the rest of my time. The chookens are going well. I'm pretty sure that all three babies I have left are little roos (I'll post pics later). Mr Lamington the Silver Laced Wyandotte cockerel is growing up and getting leggy and handsome. He's a sweet little crumpet, very gentle and cuddly, likes to sit in my lap.

Egg yields are increasing and shells are starting to thicken but we're still having some problems with a couple of hens having slightly pale combs (pale nearer the base). They're wormed and parasite free (that I can see, anyway). More research needed! Also more coffee. Then more coffee. Then more again.

Chickens don't eat or drink during the night so they should be fine. I'd put a couple of house bricks in the bottom to spoil their fun.

Life gets you down at times , the trick is to rise above it. Do the things you enjoy , so while your having that coffee , sit wth your chooks I guarantee they will make you smile. :) Lice can be hard to detect, but will cause anemia. Turn your hen over , locate the vent and then look about 2 inches higher. This is where you will find the eggs sacks if they have any. Keep smiling. :)

I know how to check for lice. We had an infestation about a month ago and they have improved since we treated it. They just haven't improved as much as I'd like them to have. I'll give them another spray and a dust this evening. It's time to dust them again anyway.

I don't think that there -is- any kind of "trick" to clinical depression. I get lots of suggestions for tricks and fixes for it but those are usually from people who have never experienced severe clinical depression themselves. You can't just "rise above" an illness. I can't rise above depression any more than I can my arthritis. All I can do is try to survive with it.
