Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Feather sexing only works on breeds bred for it, and I am not aware RIR's are able to be feather sexed.
the longer feathered one also had pale chipmunk striping so i assume she is infact female and the other took way longer to get feathers is much more alert and upright so i am assuming roo.

I also wormed everyone today.  Took the water containers away last night and popped them back in at 06:30am with Kilverm added.  Because I was working, I could not watch to see if they drank any and it was a little difficult to tell by the container levels if they had.

When I disposed of the remaining at 04:00pm and topped up the containers with fresh water, they all came over for a drink.

Would the little sneaks not have had a drink all day because of the wormer?  If they only drank when they really needed to, would they have got enough wormer in them? :/

We'll that would be the million dollar question really wouldn't it :)

I've just redone mine today because I really don't think they drank it last time. Like yours they all seemed to drink a lot AFTER I gave them back the normal water. This time I put drops of it onto bread till each had had its dose, then did the next one. It had instructions for mixing with feed though not just for adding to water. Not sure if I could do that with all wormers.

Snowed here today, had to go down the back and rescue a few horses, flooding. Our girl came home with the goods , champion and champion reserve at derby day. Today she also recieved her acceptance on the ' state squad ' with both horses. :weee

You have an amazingly talented young lady there Fancy :)

well are those from 2 different birds because if they are the one with the longer feathers is a hen and the one with the shorter feathers is a roo
if im wrong plz msg me back i like learning

I did tend to find that when I hatched mine. The boys were much slower at feathering in.

Hey Deej211 I know nothing about RIR’s, sorry.  I agree with appps though in that they do not look frizzled.  I also agree with satay and thought there could be some Silkie in the one on the right.

Talking feather sexing, are Pekin’s one of those breeds you can feather sex?  I have a theory that I am half heartedly considering.  I have noticed that in both of my Pekin hatches, all the boys had shorter wing feathers than the girls.   Even at 3-5 weeks old the girls’ wing feathers reached right around to their tail while the boys were only half way down the body.  Coincidence?

I know that some breeds can be feather sexed at one day old but I thought the window was closed after that?

So, today was the first day that all of the flock were in the run together until 4pm … again, no fights, no angst, all good.

I have never paid that much attention to the feathers on my pekins.. I went by the comb. It jumped out yelling boy at about 4 weeks I found. I will pay more attention when I hatch some this season.
On the worming. I would think that being bantams they wouldn't drink much this time of year. I usually leave my wormers in 24 hours and presume they have had enough. I wish I could do as appps does on the feed but id be there all day and having 7 aussies in one pen i'd be sure to miss who I gave the bread too but for a smaller flock I think that would be a great way to go.

It's always a bit of a lottery knowing whether or not they drank enough wormer . I do it over 2 days. Take the water away at 4 on the first day then fill with medicated water first thing next day.
