@appps - so happy Carl is doing much better!

@Deej211 beautiful photos of your flock, very nice

@ChristieB - I seem to accumulate critters as well, mind you I've never fostered as I think I'd become a foster failure and DH may divorce me!

@IamSamSam I hope the girls do well in their new home

I sold another dozen eggs yesterday to a gentleman who wants to hatch some chicks for his kids

he gets some from those eggs!

Sorry Apps ! Just scrolled threw my post didn't submit so

I'm glad Carl is doing better and is on the mend!

:). Now if she would just stop trying to fill up on the dirt so I didn't have to keep her locked up half the day to make sure she eats the food instead. Sigh lol

I'm thinking her little chicken brain thinks she needs to eat more grit but eating mud and dirt all day long is not quite what the dr ordered :). Hopefully as she puts some condition on her little chicken brain will shut up about the dirt ;-)

Lol I'm sure she will kick back to chicken normal soon.

Good afternoon fellow chickeneers

K Spot I hope you enjoy the show and I also hope you are surprised and win a place if not higher.

Not to put a damper on your plans and more out of curiosity, do you worry at all about them ‘picking something nasty up’ and bringing it home? [Note: I know nothing about showing chickens; I only have past experience with dog shows].

appps knowing that it is safe to do so in present company … happy dancing about chicken poop! [Not something to be done in public with non-chickeneers

Soaked up all the good information everyone posted regarding worming, garlic, chilli, fennel tea etc. Just a note on that: the Kilverm mentions to dispose of any remaining treated water after 8 hours.

Pennae “nicest man” definitely sounds like an apt description; generous also. That is very nice of him.

Thanks for the googy pic Deej211; after only seeing Dusty’s conehead eggs, it is nice to see some other shapes and colours. Nice eggs, by the way and beautiful pics of chickens on green grass.

ChristieB I am glad you managed some ‘You’ time. I was a single Mum for 10 years, granted to only one son. I never really considered getting married again and even thought that trying to live with someone else would be difficult; but, if you meet the right person, it works out.

Chloe looks like a wonderful mum and your orphaned little one is adorable.

So, we have had some rain today but nothing to cause either the gals or me any grief. The heavy duty shade cloth I have on the run does a pretty good job at keeping a shower at bay and when I have checked on them, all the gals are still scratching around, dust bathing and checking their chicken watches to see if it is 4pm and free range time

Yes I do @Teila which is one of the main reasons why I've never bothered to look into doing it. An acquaintence of mine is prodding me to give it a go, but I admit the disease factor is weighing heavy on my mind.

Yeah, it would weigh on my mind also K Spot but then if the people who show chickens are anything like those that show dogs, the chickens are probably better cared for than the owner

Having said that it only takes one I guess. But, surely if the risks were that high, people with ‘show’ birds or birds worth something are not going to risk them?

As I mentioned, it was more out of curiosity than wanting to put a damper on your plans. If I was not so paranoid I would go to a poultry show to check out what they are like … maybe I can You Tube one

Do you have a quarentine area, as long as you don't put her straight back in with the others at least you are only risking that one?

She is obviously lacking in something. I would try adding a sprinkle of dolomite on her feed.

My chooks love chilli. They will grab it out of my hand and run off with it if they find me with some. We grow so many types of chillis here there is always some spare. They will eat the hottest of hot chilli's as they are immune to capsasian. It's a natural defence so they can spread seeds.
That is really interesting Satay ... but then - I spoke from being a hooman who loves hot stuff, but not TOO hot. Chilli flesh + chilli seeds = too darned hot ( for me ). !!! Perhaps chooks don't have that tongue tasting thing - .... well, apparently not, as you have said here ( immune to capsasian ) ! .

Will not hold back on that any more. .... Adding a bit of chilli ( seeds 'n all ) most likely would give worms the horrors. ...

my vegie garden is about to undergo a re-do. .. I am still waiting for 'things to spring up' that have been naturally sown from chicken / bird droppings .... some years are good for that - other years .... phffft.

Sadly, my last jalapeno chilli karked it - just this week.

Anyway, thanks heaps for the advice.

Cheers ....... AB.
