Appps oh, how awful, I am so so sorry to read about Captain

I noted your comment about free ranging and how "they love it so much and it is hard to get them to go back".

Can you supervise free range in the afternoon at all? I knock off work at 4pm and let the girls out for a supervised free range which turns out to be an hour in winter and three in summer. No need to coax them back in, bed time comes and they are more than happy. Maybe just let them out for an hour or so before bed time if you are home and able to supervise?

Hey bobtheblender welcome to the thread and also to BYC. Curry is a cutie!

Deej211 at the risk of repeating myself or employing the services of copy & paste, I hope your hubby’s hand heals quickly.

Anyone a Big Bang fan? Seen the episode when Sheldon gets sick and everyone vacates … just saying

Deej211 unfortunately when chicken math takes over too much, subtraction rather than multiplication is required. Sorry to hear that that had become the case for you and also about you latest culls. Beautiful little ones though!

chooks01 congrats on the first egg and as others have advised, a small amount of blood is nothing to worry about, I have had that in the past also.

tandykins Ouch! No service sucks! Good to hear that Ophelia is recovering and wonderful news about Bumblebee!

Hey Luke no Spam for me.

Good luck with the test hatch satay.

cwrite thank you for the chuckle; loved the description of your silly girls and their eggs.

Anniebee we have a reasonably close neighbour who has fed the sulphur crested cockatoos for years and every afternoon we have hundreds of them flying over for their afternoon feed; still frightens the living daylights out of the girls every day!

Fancy the person who said “raising chickens was easy” has obviously not raised chickens

And now I am all caught up … No news from Bambrooks Bantams; all quiet and loving it!

We did have another visit from Mr Ibis this morning on the hunt for a goldfish breakfast but Cilla raised the alarm and thanks to her, all the goldfish are present and accounted for.

Spring seems to be in the air for my flock. I had several days of only one egg and then I noticed the leghorns run behind an aircon as soon as they got out of the run. I had a look and there was a suspicious looking bare nesting spot. Unfortunately the chickens saw me find their spot. Sprinkles then spent 2 hours (felt like more) whinning while she ran between every possible nesting spot in the garden and the nest boxes in the run. Eventually she laid behind the aircon. My garden has been inundated with crows so I am suspicious that they have been having egg treats that my chooks have tried to hide. I have not been letting my flock out for their afternoon free-range and I am back to 3/4 eggs a day. I told my daughter ages ago how chickens apparently steal eggs by carrying them under their wings and she keeps on insisting that she has seen them moving eggs around and burying them. I have actually seen two hens walking around with 'bulky' wings as if it was really hot although I have my doubts about the burying part, so it could also be egg stealing season in full swing too while they battle it out for who can collect the most eggs first and get to sit on them. I have a sneaky feeling I'm in for a lot of broodiness this summer.

cwrite - You are in Queensland, me in Victoria, but there are odd things happening in our garden too - even though we have had a harsh cold winter. At least you get warm sunshine, we get pale sun in the cold when it shines. But then you've had a lot of rain too, haven't you.

My girls ( when they are laying that is ) do hide their eggs, under the straw which is their own idea of a nesting box in front of the nesting boxes !! .... they rarely lay outside in their run. And I have never found an egg in the garden - when they enjoyed free ranging that is. Am kind of expecting Mandy Welsummer to begin laying again soon - her comb and wattle are darkening a little every day, but she has not yet begun to squat. I do hope spring is not too close - after all it is only July 1st ??????

I can wait quite a bit longer for eggs if need be - would prefer to have a bit more colder weather meself. i.e. a proper winter !!

And Fancy .... you said it - raising chickens is not so easy is it ... I don't know how you all cope with the many chickens I see people here have. As for culling - I couldn't do it - would have to take a chicken to the Vet to be put to sleep.

So sorry to hear of your losses Deej211 - always horridly bad to have to say goodbye to a much loved pet.

Greetings folks :frow i have sold all the bantams and also rehomed pickles the silky maran roo but they dont get picked up until the 5th also am delivering a black mixed hen and an indian game rooster to father in law next week as well as selling all the 6 week old babies so that has smashed the chicken math somewhat lol. Hopefully no more issues.

Anniebee - I also prefer a bit more winter! We had such a hot summer that I need a longer winter to recover too. This is the first winter I've been here that I haven't needed to put a heater on once because it just hasn't been colder that a bit chilly in the mornings.

Chickens can be reals pests but what would be do without them. I woke up to quiet this morning, looked out all the windows & no chickens to be seen. I leave the top half of their coop door open at night because I cannot get up early enough to let them out. Rush out to the garden and they are quietly puttering around their run. Come back in & Stampy is inside happily pecking away at the cat food.

Hi Sam, a well earned break coming your way, hope the weather is kind to you, snowing all around us today. Nicked out a couple of times to feed and hay the horses and the chooks had warm porridge for breakfast. I'm keeping the fire company today.

That sounds frought with danger! We lost chickens to a fox years ago and we are literally 2 min drive to the town centre. Nowhere is safe from them. (Well except tassie of course :)

I live next to a national park and haven't seen one. We have a large creek tributary runs into our drinking water dam still none. I know our cattle dog would put them off but I walk a kilometre to train station with the nasho on the other side of it and still no fox.
