Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

@Ashburnham. Very cute! I didn't realise you had ducks too. Love that last photo!

Congrats on the new additions!

@MThomas08. Welcome! Yes you are right silkies tend to get ignored a bit by the other breeds so it's nice they have another silkie as a friend. Mine is very much a loner. When I add someone new I keep them seperate but in sight for a week or two for them to get used to them (mine have always also been younger birds) but they still will always do a bit of pecking etc because the existing one needs to make sure the new one knows it's further down the pecking order than it is.

I've had my silkie I've had for years sitting on eggs for a few weeks so out of sight of the rest of the flock so I've had her locked off the nest but in sight for a few days till she got over being grumpy ;-) and I put it back in with everyone else yesterday and one of the others is doing exactly what yours did. She jumps on her and pecks her, she is making sure she hasn't forgot her place while she was "gone". I'm keeping an eye it doesn't get out of hand but they need to sort it out. She is also chasing her every time she goes anywhere near the feed dish so I'm putting her aside each day with her own food so she can get something to eat. Make sure you have more than one feed dish so yours isn't being kept from hers too.

@Pugg welcome! Cute little birds you have there!

@swirler what breeds is it you are hoping to hatch?

Yawn, stretch, uggg … really girls? You are hungry at 05:30am? Maybe just give me another 30mins sleep in? … I take it the fact that you are attempting to crow means “No!”, you cannot wait another 30 minutes? Silly me … what was I thinking? .. Coming!

Ash aaaw, those ducklings are gorgeous! I especially like that 2nd picture with the 3 together .. adorable! I confess to also not knowing you had ducks.

ChristieB congratulations on the chicks .. I hope you are feeling much better very soon. That upstairs/downstairs setup is pretty cool!

for an Australorp pullet.

Howdy Mthomas08 welcome to the thread and the world of chickens. Fancy is definitely more experienced with Silkie’s than I am but for what it is worth, put me down for a pullet vote on your white Silkie.

When introducing new chickens, I use the look-don’t-touch method in that they are separated by wire for a couple of days (at least) and as Fancy mentioned, there is still some pecking and squabbling to reorganise the pecking order but as long as blood is not drawn, they will work it out.

I find integrating when they are supervised free ranging to be the easiest, rather than in the run where they have less space and a quick squirt with a water pistol or medium sized super soaker helps to break up any squabbles that get out of hand

appps gave you a great tip on the food dish. My coop is in the middle of the run so we have a front run and a back run and even though my flock is integrated and get along fine, I still put out two lots of feed and water, one in front, one in back, just in case.

Oooh RodneyRooster not long now!

for a good hatch.

Gorgeous little chicks you have there Pugg. I like the cheeky looking one in the top pic, left hand side.

Tee hee Bethan, while BYC can be very educational it is also a dangerous place to hang out .. “I want that one and that one and oh yes, that one etc ... Hey honey, we need to move!”

I have to be honest, I have lost track of who has babies and who is expecting babies but I am definitely loving all the pictures!

Hehe teila that's why I fill the feeders at night. It's my kids who wake me at ridiculous o'clock for food lol

6 chicks out this morning, 3 still to go. hoping you can help me with something, maybe @Fancychooklady can't remember who else has Sussex.
I've messaged the lady I got the eggs from but don't expect an answer right away.
When I bought them I was told light Sussex. I didn't ask further, what do you think?

The darker ones look like buff Sussex, could just be the lighting. Look like Sussex to me ash also breeds Sussex. Interesting , the one with the black spot on its head, mine are all yellow at hatch, except for one that had a snip.

I had to wait for it to feather out , turned out to be a Wyandotte / Sussex. Sometimes these things happen if you keep many breeds.

Yeah I thought buff too, I'll get some better photos once they are all out, I tried to get pics with and without flash to show the colour difference they definitely aren't all pure light Sussex but that doesn't bother me, I think I'm actually happier that that aren't all the same, it means I can keep more without having too many multiples :p
Hopefully the woman gets back to me soon, I might ask if she can get a pic of the parents for better reference,

LOL- one of my kids is a teenager so getting her OUT of bed in the morning is the problem. My 9 yr old has an in built body clock : when it's the weekend he bounds out of bed at dawn but school days we need super powers to drag him out of bed!!!
