Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

5 Belgians out so far. 2 of my own and 3 of the posted ones. :weee
Zeus seems to be doing better. He can now walk with a limp on his leg. Oddest thing I have seen yet. Until Monday night he couldn't use that leg at all. It was like jelly and Monday night his strength had started to return. I don't quite get how that is as the vet originally said he had a break in his shoulder and had pulled the ligaments think it was off from there hence the limp leg. Then he looked further and though he saw cancer which would have been the reason he said for the injury. Either way I am hoping this is a good sign. Now to stop him from running after things. Hard to keep a work dog still.
Good to hear he's up and about! Congrats on ur hatches too

Well the intergration into the flock has gone very nicely so far. The big ones came out and had their treats, once they started to move on Miss Vonte brought her babies out. Whilst she was eating they were either standing in the feed watching hehe so cute, or grabbing all the bits she flicked out.

They others came straight back to check out the commotion and each took their turns at peaking at the door, none went in for a while. What the.. what on earth are they, arent they strange looking!

Then they all decided to go in for a wander around to get to water and just for sticky beaks. They all gave them a wide berth and walked around the outside each time. Was very sweet im not worried at all :) not to say i wont be cautiously watching all day! Miss Vonte was great with them. Very cold morning i think theyre just sooks and 'prefer' heat lamps, dont need them out here in the cold as 1 and 2 day olds lol.

Thats great @satay, sounds like good, unknown, news haha.

Well my chicks have been out with the flock playing today and theyre all getting along beautifully. No issues at all :-D i am wondering when i move the next lot of chicks in there over the weekend if there will be any squabbling between mums or if theyll be fine together.

Rodney went to charge me today and Hector jumped in and nailed him hehe. It was so sweet, thank u Hector :) thats my boy

Toltrazuril / baycox is supposed to treat all 11 strains of Eimeria . It is said to be a treatment only product , so unlike amprolium ( that has no withholding period ) it will not be helping your birds to build immunity. Yoghurt will not prevent Protozoa from multiplying in the birds gut. For sick birds , buttermilk will help to recoat the stomachs lining and give short term relief to the bird. Just my opinion , but if the baycox is not working I would consider changing products. :)

Baycox has a minimum 6 week witholding period on eggs, with some not recommending it for layers at all.

It is working. Im not treating the layers. Its only the chicks that are affected though i am keeping my eye out for abnormal behaviour and poop from the big girls. Everything older than 12 weeks seems to be fine at the moment. Bumper crop of eggs today. I only lost the ones i did because it was a crazy hectic weekend and i wasnt paying attention. I have heard arguments on both sides of whether or not baycox prevents immunity. I cant see why it would. As they are infected before treatment. They are only treated when the load is too high and they get sick. As far as im aware they are usually exposed to some form even within the egg. Or so I've heard. Ive also heard that probiotics help to keep their immunity to it up hence why i am going to implement a yoghurt feed weekly. I dont feed them medicated starter and i wont medicate as a preventative as apart from the babies grain and the odd scoop of scratch mix and biannual worming the layers get my chooks are organically fed. As i said i use some herbs and spices as well as sulpher in the scratch mix and grain to keep the parasitic load low and immunity high.

Cocci is everywhere and in everyone's soil some birds will be more severely impacted than others , regardless of age. Once the ocyst have multiplied by the tens of thousands you have an ' outbreak ' . Chicks will acquire some immunity if exposed to the soil from an early age, coop hygiene can also be a factor , as are wet areas around feeders and water dishes. Many people dabble in ' natural ' remedies but bring out the ' big guns ' when trouble rears its ugly head. Yoghurt will not reduce the numbers of cocidia in the birds nor will it afford the bird any level of immunity.
Baycox is what I would call a ' big gun ' and there are other products on the market , that aren't as harsh on the birds system. Just my opinion. :)

I hope so. Had to go to the vets today to get some more meds for zeus and I asked the receptionist if I could speak to the vet but she said in her not to pleasant tone that he was to busy to talk to me today. Had an attitude from the time I went in I think she was chatting on the phone and I interrupted her. :smack

Patsy my little lamb from last season is in labor I am keeping everything crossed that she has a good birth.

Awwww fingers crossed here for u too!

Well that was just plain rude. Hope u mention it next time. Nothing i hate more than seeing 'customer service' people chatting with friends and having a wow old time then hurrying u on so they can get back to their conversation
