Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Got woken up by the hugest bang at 5.15am this morning. Thought something had exploded in the house til I realized it was a loud clap of thunder. We have had a couple of nice storms in the last few days. Not a huge amount of rain but out here every drop counts. :celebrate

Yay, keep doing that rain dance. I spent the day outside planting a new hedge. I too heard a Big Bang , then all the emergency services sirens. Once I heard the rotary of the wespac rescue chopper , I realized it was a car accident. It took the horses some time to settle after the big yellow and red fly hovered over them.
Getting a bit worried about the mare in foal, she is bagging up prematurely and bolting around yesterday would not have helped.
Equine vet is coming this week to do some scans.

For the brissy girls that would have seen it on tv last night. Hubby just drove through the main street in Fernvale this morning and said it looks like a bomb went off. Trees down every where and some rooves missing a couple of large bunya trees down on buildings. That would have been one nasty storm to be in.

Gosh our animals are testing us all at the moment. I hope all goes well for her.

Gorgeous chick pics.    .... they all look so healthy and happy and in super condition.

Well done.....

thanks! And everyone else who has made similar comments :) they run the place now lol

Im loving the baby chick pics guys ... life & joy.. Beats Halloween!

Yep! We dont do halloween but apparently its huge in quensland and the northern states.

Sadly we lost the Australorp chick tonight. I noticed over the weekend that it wasn't growing at the same rate as the others. Today though it was standing funny, not moving much even when I picked it up it's resistance was pretty weak. Wish I knew what happened, I wonder if maybe it got stood on or maybe picked on because it was different to the others. I brought it in and put it under a heat pad but it was too far gone. I'm obviously just not meant to have australorps.

Ginny isn't giving up on being broody, crazy birds, I've moved her into the upstairs apartment :p the chicks and mumma pair were moved to another pen this afternoon, will get some photos tomorrow,

Sorry to hear that. Maybe she wasnt getting to food and water? Cant wait for the pics :)

Yes i lock mine up just after it hits dark. Then let them out as soon as im up and have given the kids their breakky which is normally 6-630. 7 today! :-D lol.

Well after i had said for the first week there was no pecking order initiation with miss vonte and her chicks it has started up in the last couple days. Straight back to how it was. Miss Vonte has a go at the lower 2 if theyre getting too comfortable eating hers and the chicks food. All the chicks are automatically at her position in the order. Scarlett is always top but when I feed them in the mornings Scarlett is always too busy trying to find a new laying spot with haste so she doesnt take part haha.

Well Snow definitely isnt the mum that miss vonte is.. she and the chicks stayed outside last night.. was worried as i couldnt shut them in but they survived. Obviously she has deserted the other eggs already so seems those 8 will not be joing us. Ill let her out to the big area with the others today so they can move on and hopefully spend the night INSIDE with the other chooks.

A friend has also had a lot of foaling issues and has been hand feeding and (drugging for lack of a better word - dont know what theyve been giving it) also trying to get other mares fostering. So i hope all goes well with urs @Fancychooklady.

sounds like crazy storms! Weve had mostly lovely weather. Stay safe x

Good morning Friends

*Sigh* working on site today … wonder what my chances are of today’s meetings being cancelled; pretty slim I think

RodneyRooster those pics are gorgeous .. I love the look on Snow’s face in that first one .. “Step away from my babies!”

Anniebee When GodCilla is Cilla she is the sweetest, calmest, most adorable feathered beach ball. Total transformation when broody.

My gals go to the roost by themselves and because the run is fairly secure, the small coop door [bantam sized] is not closed so they can let themselves out in the morning; only into the run though, free range is always supervised.

ChristieB I am so sorry to read of your loss

satay I am pleased Patsy seems to be over her loss. I have noted your 8 days for GodCilla’s return and do hope you are wrong

Fancy I hope your mare and her foal are OK and also those involved in the accident. My gals are not particularly fond of the traffic helicopter that buzzes over Sandgate Road most afternoons.

We were lucky to only catch the edge of the storm, lots of noise and some wind but nothing like what Fernvale copped.

The first year we lived in this house, some neighbourhood children appeared at the door trick or treating .. they looked so cute and I felt so bad that I did not have anything for them.

I was prepared the next year and reminded hubby to pick up some treats on his way home because it was Halloween to which he said “If I had known you were going to do that, I could have carved a pumpkin” [Hubby is American].

So, this year, not only will we have treats, we will have the carved pumpkin also. I will share a picture when it is done.

I was thinking about the whole hard-to-break-broody thing and GodCilla. Cilla has had three hatches and her first was the first time she went broody. She is a wonderful mum and seems to love every minute of it.

Blondie has had one hatch and while she was a good mum, did not seem to love every minute of it. Blondie is not as bad as Cilla to break.

KiKi has been the easiest to break and has never been a mum.

I wonder if anyone notices that the hardest to break broodys in their flock are ones that have experienced motherhood?

The good news .. Cilla is still Cilla and does appear to be broken.

Mum ma - Mia! I'm so sick of being sick. Just got over a 3 month ear infection and burst ear drum and now I have a sinus infection! My husband thinks it's from all the dust work down in the chicken coop

Teila Good to hear Cilla behaving. Yes our repeat broody was the only one we gave chicks too. I think she pressured us into it

Last nite when I locked up the girls, the perching order had changed again. Now there are 7 on the top and 3 have been regulated to the next rung down the ladder. Lots of facing off going on in the yard as they all jostle for position

@Teila yes that is exactly her look all the time, back off!

Oooh cant wait to see the pumpkin pic :p i am glad no one does it down here or i would also be devo'd to have to turn thwm away. We always have fruit to give! Haha.

As this is my girls' first season i cant give any input on the mummy breaking stats but i can definitely see why that would be highly likely!

Awww @locknest4 thats no good! Have u been taking antibiotics? Do u wear a face mask when out in the coop ckeaning and stuff? I highly recommend it. Just the cheap multipacks.

Pecking order is no fun if it just stays the same all the time ;-)

Well i opened the 'trap door' of snow's broody area so that she could join the others when she felt like it and shut her out of the shed so that none of the others would go in and start getting comfy there. Since shes not sleeping in her nest box anyway i figured i cant just move her in that at night so ill let her move out in her own time.

Didnt take long for Miss Vonte to notice the new area had opened up that she hadnt explored before so she took her chicks in for a visit. I was all nervous about how theyd all go togwther but all seemed good. All the chicks knew who to stay with and all that went on with the mums was one good peck from Miss Vonte and no more was heard of.

Of course i took a few pics of that too. From a distance this time tho.

The week chicks are just zooming around but the day olds were so cute and clumsy. So many twigs everywhere in there they were having trouble getting over them all all the time. The older ones looked like theyd been doing it for years :-D was pretty cool to see the huge difference

Oh you poor thing. A few years ago I had a continual ear infection for 6 months. It sure was hell. I hope you are on the road to recovery soon. :hugs

Your hubby could be right. Every time I cleaned :)the coops I suffered sinus problems. Not that surprising given the amount of dander under the perches and the rising ammonia . I now wear one those disposable masks and safety glasses. :)
