Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thanks Annie, just go easy on the cheese. Hubby just arrived with a trailer load of Lucerne . It must be so sweet, Jack has his eyes closed whilst he eats it.

I am pretty careful with cheese - they get it only about once every 2 > 3 weeks in their mix. And then only a handful all chopped smaller !! If it were up to them they'd eat a bag full.

They tend to pick that out first to eat. !!

Lovely to hear that Jack so enjoys his lucerne. It's such good stuff, and always smells delicious.

Have thoroughly enjoyed looking at all the wonderful photographs here, of new bubs, baby dove, ducklings, chickens etc.

Sorry - I can't recall everyone who has posted them, without going back many pages.

Great to hear Fizzybelle that Agnes is so much improved.

We have had a few torrential downpours in the past day or so - Geelong ( Victoria ) was flooded all over, and we have had thunderstorms and 3 good dumps of rain, so far up here.

Sure hope all in Tassie get a good drenching. From the weather chart - ( newscast admittedly ) it looked like you were going to be awash with it all. But it has yet to happen ?

Cheers to all .........

The thunder storm hit about 20 mins ago, I was out dead heading the roses. Yes it is finally raining. Our little Castiel is not sure what to make of the ' big bangs ' in the sky , nor the wet stuff. Time to drag the kayaks up the bank , just in case. :) . My garden just let out a huge sigh of relief. It's pouring.

Oh Kat they are adorable. :love I miss baby ducks. Don't have a drake anymore.
they are....and so friendly with the silkies. hey when were you able to sex them... read so many sites saying feather sexing about 4 week and a half weeks where others are saying you cant and have to wait til they are older or the boys go through a growth spurt.I really dont mind either way but apparently 2 drakes to 2 females are to stressful for the girls.

Barastoc  ... Golden Yolk, is indeed a very well balanced mix of food - and perhaps in South Australia is the cheapest, but not so in Victoria that I have noticed.   There are a couple of cheaper brands that I've seen, but I was mainly referring to any kind of generic or home brand chicken pellet .... which would be much cheaper.  Pet Barn sell a  cheap chicken layer pellet ( that's what I wouldn't touch either ).      And as mentioned here before, I do not buy on line.     I purchase at a Pet Store in our village in the Dandenongs, ( which is expensive ) and at the Stock and Produce merchant about 10 mins. drive away.   They have a huge range of many items for most animals and birds.

Barastoc has a good reputation, and is - as you mentioned, 'one of the best balanced'

..........

Yes here the cheap and nasty foods are 18-20 for a 20kg bag, but one of the 2 food stores always has the barrastock gold yoke at 14-17.

The reason I would use other mixed, or types if I could afford it is that most of the time less than half my flock is layers, I always have heaps of jubilees and roosters. Right now I have 4 laying hens, 2 broody hens, 2 hens raising chicks , 2 pullets yet to lay, 4 roosters, and 10 chicks born late December. So as you can see the golden yolk is slightly high in calcium for my flock, but it's the best I can afford, as the duck food that would be ideal is 27 for 20kg

Being in SA you should be able to get laucke cheaper than the rest of us. I use the game bird finisher cut down 50/50 with a free range grain. It's 22% protein but less than 2% calcium. My silkies love it because it is a micro pellet. It contains all the essential ingredients including amino acids methionine and lineolic acid.

I don't buy the finisher but i do by the game bird starter for the quails here and it's $25, I also buy show bird breeder for $21 and Starter and grower which are about $21 each as well and i forgot duck feed as well it's around the $24. (all laucke brand) I pay $13 ish for the avigrain for the princesses :lau Keeping in mind i have to drive 35km each way to get it. We have a produce in town that only stocks Barrastock and refuses to get other brands in.
