Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Early morning what do you do.

So I let the chooks out and the ran around for the scratch mix then Pepper started to sneeze. She sneezed and sneezed, the whole time keeping her mouth open between to mouth breathe. Went on for a good five minutes. It appeared that she had something caught and was trying to sneeze it out which is understandable as she is a real pig with food.

I had no idea how to help? Eventually after I grabbed her to put her near the water that must have moved it as she stopped and then ran off to try and eat Carl's breakfast. What is the procedure to assist in that sort of scenario though?

As for Carl, we have had about three days where she wouldn't eat anything. Not even watermelon or scrambled eggs! Yesterday she ate some watermelon and this morning I tried the scrambled ages again and she did eat some. All she really wants to do is eat the dirt.

Not a lot you can do. King George scoffs his food and often honks as though something went down the wrong way.
Try Carl on a little cooked rice with tuna , I also add steamed soft broccoli. I would be inclined to hold off on the water melon. :)

I'm a bit concerned that if the crop isn't emptying well yet that something like tuna may sit in there and rot. She's not had much watermelon, probably one 1/4 melon slice in the whole week. It's been more of an indicator she isn't eating than anything else. Sigh.

I've thought about the rice, the vet said no grains but I'm not sure if once boiled it fits in that catagory any longer?

Cooked rice should be fine, anything that traps up in crop will eventually ferment and turn to sour crop. Grains tend to sit in crop especially sunflower seeds. The rice on its own doesn't contain much nutrition, but if you add some soft boiled egg or even raw egg and Greek yogurt it will make the consistency softer and give you something to mix the poly aid plus into. I make the poly aid plus up to a thicker consistency and slowly syringe it into the beak, this at least ensures that she is getting probiotics and all the vits and minerals that she needs. I've also found that the poly aid plus restores their appetite for food. You could also wet down some layer pellets until you have a mash.

Good morning folks

[Sorry about the lengthy post]

While not nice for those having the same issues, it is nice to know I am not alone when it comes to issues with four legged neighbours wandering.

I did consider getting a cat trap but then what do I do with the cat? I could not take it to the ‘pound’ because what will happen if the owners do not pick it up and if they ‘lose’ one cat, they will probably just go out and get another.

Also, being non confrontational, I try all ways to keep the peace and while the cat may be annoying me, I am not one to annoy the neighbours by confronting the issue. Not much point catching the cat and then taking it back to them, they will just let it loose again. Yeah, I could threaten that next time it goes to the pound but that is not in my skill set

My own fault, but I will have to live with it and just have a whinge to you guys occasionally

satay sorry to read about your little budgie; not a nice way to go.

Did I tell you about my colleague’s daughter’s guinea pig? They got up one morning to find one GP freaking out and on first sight, one missing. On closer inspection of the GP’s cage, a python was curled up in the sleeping area with the freaking out GP’s friend inside it

Hi there LuckysMum nice to meet you! I agree with the great advice you have already received.

appps while not technically improving, it is good to read that Carl is hanging in there and at least eating something. If I remember correctly, she was pretty much the same last time following surgery and took a few days to get back to eating properly?

So, I have a dilemma that I would like some input on please?

If you remember, KiKi and Crystal are Cilla’s bubs and nearly 12 months old. KiKi is the cute little buff silkie mix frizzle.

She can be a little bossy with Blondie, chasing her away from food, picking on her etc, but not enough that Blondie appears to be disadvantaged and Blondie is a good weight. As you know though, different story if they are broody at the same time and then it is full on chick ninja fighting.

Anyways, KiKi is VERY noisy and demanding .. she is the one who half crows and it sort of sounds like a mix of crowing and honking. She makes a huge racket any time after 3pm demanding to be let out for the scheduled 4pm free range. That is not so bad because it is afternoon but it is a little irritating when I am trying to work and still have an hour to go.

The problem I have is that she has started doing this in the morning also. Any time after 05:00ish. Probably not enough to annoy the neighbours but enough to wake me and my also my son.

Again, not too much of a problem in that he has to be up at 7am for work and I try very hard to keep her quiet until then.

The problem is the weekends when he likes to sleep in and stopping her from being noisy until 9 or 10 is tricky.

I have figured out that a lot of the noise she makes is in response to Dusty’s much quieter whinging .. Dusty loves to whinge. So basically, you get a quiet whinge from Dusty followed by this loud crow/honk from KiKi. If Dusty is not whinging, KiKi is pretty quiet.

Basically KiKi is noisy, demanding, a little bossy and greedy which makes doling out mealworms tricky because she steals them off everyone else and always get way more than she should. Hubby is not a fan of hers. He has not mentioned rehoming her but probably would not be too fussed if she was gone.

I did get my son some ear plugs and sometimes he closes his bedroom window early morning and goes back to sleep.

My problem … I sometimes think about rehoming her because of the noise and issues keeping her quiet but then I know that the physical act of handing her over to someone would break my heart. Sending her somewhere all alone and wondering where she was going and what sort of life she was going to have would also break my heart. If I picture rehoming her in my head, I get upset but the ‘stress’ [probably not the right word] of feeling guilty that she is picking on Blondie and waking up my son is a problem for me also.

I am not sure what to do and I know it is not something easily answered by others, but maybe someone has a suggestion?

Poor little birdie. :(
At least you have made friends with one of the less venomous snakes , now if that was a tiger or a king brown the story might be different. The snake that I encountered last week apparently killed the neighbors dog.

Oh yeah those types are totally different. While we have browns, death adders and tigers here i am happy to say i have not seen one. My neighbour two doors ups little dog got bitten by a brown snake. Thankfully it turned out to be a dry bite so she survived.

Thanks for replying, I was going to put her under our mango tree she has a bunny hutch and its cooler than anywhere else. She does have some feathers. I just think she is getting cramped. Though she does have quite a big box. I don't mind keeping her in. I guess we just have to pray for cooler weather next week is another hot week.
Thanks

They will be fine outside as long as they have shade and lots of water. We get into the forties all the time and mine all do ok.

My love of snakes was not always there , When we were first here i saw a snake when i was home alone ran inside and locked the door and wouldn't come out for the rest of the day :) Hubby and son decided to get our first pet snake and it just went from there. Now i understand them so much better. So far i have been able to remain calm, they really are such beautiful animals to watch in their own environment slithering along the ground going about their own business , whether that would happen if it was one of the more deadly is yet to be seen.
Are you able to cover the pen in the morning to keep it dark for longer for her? Note don't ever get a Belgian if you live in the city those girls are super loud in the mornings demanding to be let out.
Our coastal python could easily eat a guinea pig or 4 in one sitting. Unfortunately when we have small pets in areas where snakes are it makes them a easy meal for the snake. That's why i don't blame the snake that ate my budgie. It was looking for dinner and found a hole and a nice free feed in the aviary.

Teila, I have some silkie girls that make more noise than all of roosters put together. When they see me coming with the feed bucket they start a ruckus , if I'm late with the feed I can hear them from the house, 50 m away. It always mifs me when I hear people saying that they can't have Roos because of the noise they make , they have obviously never heard the ' boisterous ' egg song.
As I am sure you are an early riser , my only advice would be to feed them early and throw in a lettuce or a stepped on Apple / pear to keep them occupied in the wee hours.

Forgot to add Thor never seems fazed by snakes and will just stand beside me and watch like i do thankfully. Zeus got bitten by a green tree snake on the nose when he was little so thankfully that turned him off them too. Thor has a lizard fetish which freaks me out as goannas terrify me. He will grab a full sized one by the tail and shake it with me yelling at him to drop it. Thankfully he has never hurt one but i am more scared it will hurt him with their big claws and sharp teeth.

I agree with fancy. I would do the cooked rice and raw egg. Some probiotics and some vitamins .
