Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hi all

Welcome to the newbies ! All I would suggest about the bush turkey is to put up pickets and run wire around the area to keep them out. They are territorial and will always be around. National parks and wildlife maybe able to assist or wires(they assist npws) I'm in south Sydney btw Alli. Hope this helps

Satay I'm sorry for your loss. You have had a few this year ! Hope it improves and belated birthday and Easter wishes for everyone!

Sam that sounds odd. Maybe the dominant hen needs a break from the flock ? She obviously thinks the male is interloping on her turf. By taking her away she is the newbie to the flock might subdue her a bit? Anyone else have ideas?

Alliterationsss you must live near me! I had three bush turkeys who grew up here and one extra one who is less friendly who arrived a few months ago

They won't go away either! My neighbour and I didn't mind them until the new one started picking on our girls..the turkeys roam from property to property.

My chickens now live in my back garden due to a rouge fox...the bloody turkeys have also moved into the back garden! I have trained my dogs to chase them out but they are really dumb birds and don't get the message. I also have a fenced area for the silkies for when I go out and somehow the turkeys manage to squash into there then flap like a demon because my dogs bark at them and they can't get back out.

I have no idea how to stop them so if someone does please share! My husband thew rocks at them for a while but they just look for when he isn't here...now they visit early morning and later in the evening and can't be all that dumb as they watch to see if the dogs are with me or not, no dogs, happy turkeys! They fly quite high too!

Satay, I am really sorry for your loss. I have yet to have any girl last that long due to foxes or my neighbours dogs so can only imagine how upset you are.

BTW how do I strike mint? I Have some but now want to go mint mad to deter the remaining bush rats...

Thanks Blondie. I can't help with mint. I am the only person I have ever heard of that can't grow mint. I have bought so many punnets over the years and they all die. So much for it being a weed.... Not if I plant it. I can grow every other herb but have given up on mint lol.

So know some of us got caught by the beak book thread :) did you guys see the one on Facebook saying Julia Gillard had resigned? Caught a few too lol

Bit of sad news this morning. Went out to feed the girls and I found old blacky chook had passed. She was the last one from my original chickens when I first moved here. I had her 6 years but the old fella who gave her to me and her 8 sisters of different breeds said they were old and he could not face them dying on him so he wanted me to take them. OBC lasted another 6 years. RIP OBC.
Oh I am so sorry satay. R.I.P Blacky.
