Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hmm I think I like the design of this feeder better, a little more open and the food level is a bit higher. My dine-a-chook one is ok, just the food level is a bit lower than I'd like. I might customize it.

Check out these naughty chicken pics for a really good laugh, the last one is my absolute favorite.

The one with the dog had me rolling

Tryinglittleleg Hi welcome to a great site. Everyone is very helpful.

aussie1chook Hi welcome. Always so much to learn from everyone. How is are your birds going? I hope that it’s nothing serious.

SilkieChickStar Rosie look very comfy there.

The dog one made me laugh too. Thought of bear following the chooks licking up the droppings when they are free ranging. yuck

And what a lovely egg it is. Mine are just coming back into lay too. I met a lady the other day that was going to eat her chickens because they weren't laying anymore. Took me some time to convince her that it was just because they were molting and that they would start laying again.
'
I've had a few customers over the years ring me and say they might need new ones as these aren't laying anymore. Usually first moult too. Once i explain they are like oh really didn't know that.

Have seen similar comments on here too.

My youngsters are the only two laying for me at the moment. The rest haven't laid for ages but many of them are moulting very heavily. And on that vein how do you all cope with the feathers? Honestly looks like there has been a massacre in the run and they are harder to rake up than poop. Then what do you do with them? Do they compost in such high numbers or should I just chuck them in the bin? Before it got this bad I added my rakings to a vege bed and the bed still looks like it was once an ancient chicken burial ground lol

Kat79 just my humble opinion but that egg looks like a new layer to me .. may be just a bit too big for an oops .. congrats!

Congrats on the egg drought break also Sam!

Fancy, yet more chickens who owe you their lives

satay love the picture and yep, that is definitely me! Fist pumps and happy dancing

KiKi was the only one laying so the last egg here was the 20th of April, just before she passed away.

Cilla has not laid since the 19th of January
Since the 10th of January Dusty has laid 6 eggs
Blondie has not laid since the 20th of January
LuLu has not laid since the 13th of December and
Crystal stopped on the 3rd of April

In April I got a grand total of 16 eggs from 6 chickens

I can sooo relate to the “My owner had to buy eggs at the GROCERY STORE because I’m a freeloading slacker” BUT on a positive note, no one is broody lol

What is an oops?? I am very curious to know lol

Hey SilkieChickStar an oops egg aka fairy egg, witch egg, rooster egg or fart egg
wink.png
are tiny eggs that may or may not have a yolk. Little eggs are often much darker than normal, as they spend more time in the shell gland pouch and get an extra layer or two of pigment. They can happen when the hen's oviduct releases a small piece of reproductive tissue or another small foreign mass enters the hen's oviduct, triggering the regular formation of an egg. The foreign object will be treated like a normal yolk and enveloped in albumen, membranes and a shell.

Occasionally a hen will also lay an ooops egg when something disturbs her reproductive cycle and young girls may lay an ooops egg or two when coming into lay and still getting their reproductive systems in gear.

We have had a few here and unless they occur regularly from the same hen, nothing to worry about:

Hello,

I have been playing catch up for days. The pause button doesnt work on BYC. I am sorry if i have missed anything.

Welcome to all the new posters.

sjturner79, sorry for your lost chicks. I hate not knowing. Some people hate Micky birds aka Noisy Minors (the native one) because they make a racket and dive bomb. I like them for that reason. They have alerted me several times over the years to butcher birds, snakes etc and even uninvited cats. My cats have received a swooping every now and then. But they were probably up to no good.

This morning at 6am the chooks went off - warning, and so did the magpies and Micky birds. I couldn't see anything but I suspect a snake. Fingers crossed I'm wrong and it is a false alarm or what ever it was moved off.

Hope you had a good birthday Fancy. I also hope you aren't too cold or wet.

Deej211 congrats on the chicks. I can't wait for the updates and pics as they grow. Love pics.

I went to the rare breeds and varieties show at Dayboro on the weekend. There were some lovely birds there and I won a raffle.

I'm hanging out for the results of my pathology. The birds are all looking and behaving well. This morning I could have lingered for ages with them.

Just love my dorkings. They are gorgeous by appearance and nature.
