Good morning folks :frow

Just a bit of Trivia, we just passed 3,000 pages in this thread and 30,000 posts:clap

Wow satay that spur thing is bizarre .. I hope you are able to work out what happened.

As you know, I have no experience with roosters, but is there a chance he accidentally tangled them himself and in his panic to untangle them, pulled them both?  [Grabbing at straws here! lol  ]

Redguinea, Fancy, Anniebee, sjturner79 [and any anyone else I have forgotten] I am sorry to read of your weather woes and the damage caused.

Stay safe and warm everyone :hugs

I hadn't noticed those facts on the thread. To think I've been here since this thread began with ducky starting it. I sure have read alot and met some great people on this thread.

I hope that's the case. He seems ok today. Staying in his house but no bleeding so I'll have to see how he goes.

Can never resist a puzzle satay .... so went rummaging around on Google and found that :

" Roosters will once in a while naturally shed their spurs, sometimes resulting in a bleeding stump where the spur used to be attached to the leg. "

from - http://jackshenhouse.com/VSChickHealth.htm under the sub-heading of " Bleeding Spurs " almost to the bottom of the entire article.

Shedding the spurs naturally can cause them to bleed.

According to that paragraph 'new spur buds' should begin to appear within a short time. You have done all it has suggested .... but have a read - it was interesting.

............

redguinea .... and satay - -

must admit the thought had crossed my mind about a cruel act, but I rather think there would have been one heilluva rucus, if a stranger tried to cut spurs off any rooster.

And in my rummaging, found another interesting comment - on two sites. When spurs get too long occasionally people cut them, to reduce 'wear and tear' on hens.
This apparently is not the way to do it .... the spurs can be twisted off and it does not hurt the rooster. Apparently very easy to do.

I rather gather this is similar to when I had to cut my cats claws .... being very careful to never go near the red streak ( which is blood, or the 'quick' ) in the claw. But many times, before actually shortening their claws that way, the outer shell could be picked or twisted off .... it was fairly fragile looking, and came off like one entire empty claw. Would find them in bedding on occasions too where they had been shed naturally.. Have also seen cats try to pull that protective shell off the claw, with their teeth.

After that came off, the claws that needed cutting because of sharpness, were quite a deal shorter. But the little tip still had to be cut, to de-sharpen them. I never had one bleed, in all the years I was cutting cats / rabbits and dogs claws. Dogs are very difficult to do, they are hard nails, and most often very dark in colour, hard to see where the quick is, but it can be done.

Am gathering something similar happens to roosters and either the outer shell comes off, or the entire spur ( as in your case satay ) detaches itself.

Hope this helps .......

Cheers ....

Wow what a record!

700

Not the best photo but there are no tears and the blood is actually on the inside not the outside as it looks. It really just looks like it fell off. It was right beside where he had been sitting all morning. The mark on the paper is just a reflection.

Wow that's interesting, but according to what Anniebee says it must be relitavely normal!

Power went out last night. Woke to find driveway blocked by a pine tree and a gumtree. Not sure how we have power as our line is trapped under the tree. It's snowing !!!!!

Fancy - - - - So Tassie copped it full on again ? We missed the snow

... but it has been extremely cold, and blowing gales, which have quietened right down today, and at this moment, a tiny bit of sunshine peeping through. However, I do think we are in for some more tonight - as low clouds are gathering to the west, and headed our way.

I hope your trees have been safely removed. Guess they'd have to cut the power while removing the trees. Hope you don't have any more of this garbage, and that your power returns and remains.

IF we get snow, will post pics. !!! A few years back - one Christmas morning in fact - awoke to find it hailing like no tomorrow. Inches thick, and covering everything. Ground white and darn near broke my neck on the ice, trying to get a few pics. If I can find the pics, will post them. It was quite extraordinary. A 'White Christmas' morning, not seen since I was in America for several months over the winter and part of Spring.

THAT was cold, but a 'nice' cold. !!

Cheers ........

I've never seen a Christmas like that!

Omg Anni. I hope you have a good fireplace. Don't forget pics if it snows. I love to see pics of snow just never want to see it in person.

We have a massive fireplace - the central attraction in the family room. People this week, will be cutting up wood and putting it out on the nature strip for those who can burn wood.

We have enough at the moment ( and no trees down on our property - a very tall snow gum worries me a bit though !! ) .... so I have not had to go out snagging a car full of wood, another nervous uproar for my husband who thinks I am totally nuts carrying loads of wood in a hatchback, back seat and passenger seat.

I am careful to distribute the load as evenly as possible though. .... that's what comes of being mostly country raised, but without the use of a ute. !!

Has never hurt my car(s) ... have traded in a couple for later models over the years and my latest was brand new 6 years back. No damage done, but a lot of interior cleaning up to do afterwards.

Isn't it amazing just what you can fit in a hatchback. I have had a washing machine in mine. Guy thought i was nuts at the time but i said nope it will fit and it did.

I did notice that he has little stumps there so hopefully he will be back to his old self in a few days. Thanks for the info Anni.

So, after finding Mr Floppy Ears in our front garden again this morning, I have decided that I am going to try and make friends with him.

As always, I could not get close before he ran off into next doors’ Asparagus Ferns but from a distance his coat looks matted and dirty and I figure that if he is sleeping under our tree in the front garden on a cold morning, he probably does not have a home.

Any cat with a home is going to be sleeping somewhere nice and warm on a morning like this, not roughing it under a tree. Also, if he had a home, would he not run towards it instead of seeking shelter in the Ferns, where I have often seen him?

Also, on one of the recent rainy days, he sought shelter under our car in the carport .. again, if he had a home, would he not be sheltering there?

Anyways, I left a bowl of food for him in the front garden as the start of what I think is going to be a very long process. I have no idea what I am going to do with him if/when I earn his trust but I will worry about that hurdle if/when I get to it.

I will try and get a picture of him and may be pop it on Facebook and Gumtree to see if anyone does own him.

I am going to keep a record of my progress …. Wish me luck!

Mr Floppy Ears was curled up in our front garden bed. I sat down on the path, a good 12ft away and talked softly to him. He did not run off and I did not approach any closer. I went back inside after 10mins or so.

Mr Floppy Ears was asleep in the front garden under our tree. When I approached with a bowl of food for him, he took off into next doors’ Asparagus Ferns. I have left the food out for him on the corner of the garden bed.
